I'll give you a (bloody broad) hint:

The horse wears it around his neck.

The horse pushes against it.

With the horse pushing against it, it (connected to the vehicle by means of wooden poles and leather straps) pulls the vehicle.

I wrote about it in the original essay you characters responded too.

While it is refered to as a collar, it is not the same thing as a dog collar.

(That should do it.)

If the above is too subtle, let me know.

I'm going out on a limb here and saying "Horse Collar".:D

If they didn't have horse collars back then, wouldn't it have been more difficult for a horse to pull a wagon?

"I think she's got it."

"Is it contagious?"

"Don't worry, we've been vaccinated."

Of course. Sometimes horses literally strangled trying to haul a heavy load. With the horse collar the weight is put on the shoulders, not the neck. It meant a revolution is trade and transportation. The carriage as we know it became possible with the horse collar, and the stage coach of the American West. Without the horse collar the American Great Plains could never have been farmed because of the thick mat of roots from thousands of generations of grass and other plants.

I feel sorry for the poor horses who had to pull those wagons without the benefit of a horse collar.

Was the yoke for oxen developed at the same time as the horse collar?

The yoke goes back a long way before the horse collar. It's what they used with horses before the horse collar got invented. And what horses would choke on when loads got too heavy. Take a look at a chariot from the early Roman Empire sometime, you'll see a version of the yoke.
