Dr Who RPG

Crothian

First Post
I got my copy in the mail today. It is a good looking product, but I'm not a fan of the box it all comes in. The box ripped a little when I opened it and once opened it was not as easy to get everything back in it. There is not any room inside it for additional items.

The mechanic is very simple. 2d8+skill+attribute+possible traits verse target number. I haven't fully read it but it does not seem to offer much advice on how to handle one player playing the Doctor and everyone else with sidekicks. It would be nice to see options for more then one time lord and also just other time lords. Sure it goes against canon but I think RPGs need to break from Canon at times if a group wants to.

Anyone else get this game? Anyone play it yet?

Trying to decide whether to buy it. I probably won't ever play it, but there is no greater thing in this world than Doctor Who.

Which reminds me - two days till Doctor Who Day!

That's interesting. For someone who's as big a fan of the Doctor as you, what would it take for you to play an RPG of it? It seems to me you'd be the primary audience for this product. (Or is it just a matter of lack of time, not the game itself, that makes you say you'd never play it?)

It's not about ever getting to play it, it's about the awesomeness of Dr Who! It might get some play as game days and Gen Con as one shots, but I doubt I'd ever do this game as a campaign. It does seem to suffer from issues that Buffy and Ars Magica solved better; that of the overly dominant Timelord character.

For me not to be currently running adventure 3 of 12 of War of the Burning Sky for D&D 4e! Plus a predictable element of procrastination.

I don't have the game, but would it be possible to take the system and do more of a Torchwood-esque campaign? That way most of the players would be on the same level.

I used to run a campaign of the old FASA Doctor Who RPG. That was fun. :) I had the entire TARDIS full of timelords at one point!

I'm interested in this new RPG; I hope it's good. Must remember to order it!

Cheers!

Torchwood team (or UNIT team) is specifically mentioned as one of the ways to play, though I hear that possibility might get explored more fully in a Torchwood supplement.
