A lot of those extraplanar dragons appeared in Dragon with Sam Wood illustrations already.

Exactly half of them, if I counted right, as the fiendish dragons in #300.
According to Andy Collins:

The fiendish dragons are a weird case--they were originally written for Fiend Folio, pulled for lack of space, slated instead for Draconomicon, and then published in Dragon.

So I guess technically they'd also be "pick-up" though Draconomicon had them "first".

With regard to Dennis Cramer/McClain, I personally am not too fond of his style either, but I recognize that he is certainly competent. I look at some of the artist friends I have, and Cramer's style is much more confident. It's not pretty, usually, particularly his eyes, but he's talented.

Then again, Rebecca Guay is beautiful and talented (and her art ain't half bad neither), so I wish I could see more of her art.
