Draggin' the Wagon

How many adventuring parties use wagons, and what do you use them for?

Personell carrier?
Loot Transport?
Supply transport?
Mobile home?
Ambulance?
Merchandise shipment?
Cover story?
Weapons platform?
All the above?

My group used a wagon when they were trekking to a far-off dungeon. It actually came in quite handy. The mage slept in the back during the day, and at night when they stopped would work on making magical items. It also helped them out serving as cover from attacks, and from spells since many need an unbroken line of sight. And storage, musn't forget storage.

DMs seem to love setting them on fire, so not such a good investment, IMO.

The weapons platform idea is a good one, though. Why not mount a ballista on one? Kickback breaking the wheels and/or the horses' legs, I guess...

The last party made extensive use of a wagon, we used it for hauling treasure, keeping supplies in and carrying our extra possesions and tools in. Heck we had the wagon special made, it was sort of like a RV for the characters. The new party doesn't use one at all but they don't have that much stuff and don't do as much travelling around.

Tents, pots/pans, extra clothes, rope, food, feed, trade items, books...

I don't really give a lot of gold in my games but art and speciality items.

A wagon/pack animals are used as a matter of convienance, yes; the party could carry or wear everything but it slows them down and even hinders them.

One group I played in had a Ranger PC in it, who would drag a cart behind him everywhere he went. He never greased the thing, so it squeaked wherever he went. Because of his work schedule, in most sessions the player would show up at the last minute, so it became a running joke that the player would show up with his cart right in the middle of the adventure, and the party always knew just before he showed up. "SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK!" :)

One game I surprised them with a giant rat, instead. :D

Actually, my party mounted a kind of siege weapon on their wagon, it had racks for over a dozen arrows and when you released a board... FWANG fwip fwip fwip fwip... they all went at once. They got it off a raider ship that peppered them with it.

I once played in a campaign where we used a big wagon as a mobile base of operations. I don't remember where the idea came from. It just sort of evolved. First we were just using it as transport for the twelve people in the party cause walking sucked. Then the gnome mounted a ballista on it. Then the mages in the group got togather and enchanted the whole thing. It was bigger on the inside then the outside. It had a magic research lab and bedrooms for everyone. It was also fireproof. The next enchantment we were talking about was making the 'death wagon' fly. I wanted to mount a hot air balloon and have it pulled by flying creatures. Too bad the game fell apart.

my party has a wagon.. and it has mystical carvings all over it from when our Barbarian was taken over by an artifact.. and it has a Gorgon skull head ornament.. and the scale from said gorgon over the top of it... o.. and neons.. I mean some racks under the wagon where we store out Contiual Flame torches.

and the horses are called - Mugen, STi, Nismo, and something else..

for some reason the DM just can't bring himself to destroy it.
