Dragon 300 a bad idea

My impression is that this material has been introduced to the hobby to elevate heroic PCs.

You are wise ForceUser, and you have a great storyhour.

Reading the spell descriptions in the most recent Dragon inspired me to creat a paladin. I haven't wanted to play a paladin in about 12 years. I tends toward moral relativism, and don't believe that any self aware race can be truly evil. HOWEVER, when I read those spells, I wanted to make a character that could track down those Necromancers and Smite them, and Smite them again.

I'm very sure that the Book of Vile Darkness will be a masterful aid for the DM to make very, memorable villians.

Hooray to Mellkor (Lord of All!).

Does this make him a bad person, anyone? Or does it make him someone who is aware of his own Dark Side, and chooses to express it by gaming, rather than by, say, lawbreaking (to stay clear of any other issues)?

Finding a creative outlet for your darkside is much more healthy, IMHO, than bottling all up inside yourself so it can fester.

By playing in an evil campaign you are saying "I want to be the terrorist".

Ewww. That smells too much like the assertation a while back that if you played evil characters you (as a player) must be part evil.

And again, that's no more true than saying the actor who plays the baby-eating villan in a movie is evil.

It's just something different to do.

/me pulls up a seat and roasts some marshmallows on the flames that this thread is about to go down.

Actually, from what I heard the dragon 300 special sealed section was pretty tame and weak. Like it was more about having a special sealed section than actually having something in there that may upset a reader.

I haven't bought dragon for awhile. I'd rather just go to RPGNow and get a whole book or module for the price of a magazine.

Is Anthony Hopkins evil? After all, he's played Hannibal Lector three times now. And he's pretty evil.

Let me get this straight, you're trying to associate the BoVD-style content of Dragon 300 to terrorism?

Uhm... I disagree. Reality. Fantasy. A big gaping gorge between them.

Besides, that stuff isn't really intended for PCs. Oh, there will be people using it for PCs, but that's not a problem with WotC (and IMNSHO, is not a problem, period. I can play the most depraved devil-worshipping necromancer and still be a good citizen IRL).

You know, I myself am not sure. I perceive myself as a very weak person in real life, and mostly associate evil with true power, good characters are usually servants of others.

Melkor (Lord of All!):

SSSHHHHH!

They haven't got it yet. Repeat after me:

Being bad in a game is OK.
Being bad in the real world is, um, bad.

Got it? Now when anyone says anything to you about your little...escapades...just repeat that and everything will be fine.:D

Clearly, you are wrong!

It's quite obvious that people have no control WHATSOEVER over how they allow things to influence/effect them! Clearly, if the past has proven anything, if people are exposed to anything remotely outside the mainstream, they will turn evil and will do bad things like talk about magazines they haven't even seen yet!

I hope this asinine thread is shut down soon...
