Don't have my issue on hand but I remember to of the previews, an artical on beholders, and an artical on player lycanthropes as player characters.

I'm going to like this issue just because I like options in my games...variant core classes work for me (they should have done this for ALL the classes, but even for just a few it works).

I think the cleric variant, Arcane Disciple, is really cool. I don't know if its more, or less, powerful, but that class is one I would really like to play in a game.
