Remember that the Fire Warrior has Fly 6 for movement. It's a 1st level daily that gives you a perfectly obedient and expendable flying minion (complete with opposable thumbs) for five minutes. If a wizard can't get any out-of-combat mileage out of that, he's not trying.

It still seems pretty weak. A wizards magic missile can also fly, and deals about the same damage, but you get to use it in every encounter. The fire warrior has good life and Ac but... doesn't really defend the wizard, so its not much better than ranged attacks. I suppose it gives a tactical advantage to the wizard by tossing it in a melee for flanking and opportunity attacks with the other players, but seriously, 1d8 damage? Who wants to waste their time controlling something that does less damage than them?

I like the marking idea. Maybe give it something similar to the paladins mark, but using fire damage instead of radiant.
