Dragon Articles - Summer of 09 v Winter of 10

I really liked the longer articles. I don't bother to read these 2-3page things that are not much more than a small set of powerz.

Heck, I hardly bother to go to wizards.com/ddi since the change in format.

It's not a protest thing; it's just a lack of interest. Good thing for them that I still have a few months left prepaid on my subscription. Maybe they'll improve in the meantime.

This is similar to how I feel. In fact, I am willing to bet that unless something changes, when my prepaid is up I won't renew, and just buy it when I need a CB update (like once a year). Even dungeon has been a bit of a yawner... I do like the Chaos Scar stuff, and would prefer more of that over some sweeping, epic campaign that I will never run.

Maybe the latest articles are a result of tight deadlines over the holidays at WoTC? Am I being too generous? I haven't found them very good in the last few months either.

I use DDI almost exclusively for the builder and compendium, which is really worth what I pay (I think).

I'm sort of lukewarm to the magazines. I've used some of the Dragon articles to expand my players' options and ran one or two Dungeon adventures when I was in a bind, but wasn't overly impressed.

Here's hoping Noonan's level 30 Scales of War adventure is the start of a better Dungeon!

I also preferred the previous format with longer, typically more interesting articles. I think that those shorter articles are much easier and faster to write and that's the reason for the format switch.

I just got my email from WotC letting me know my yearly subscription is up in 30 days - I think I will decline. While Dungeon has been fairly good (love the Chaos Scar; hate the Scales of War) I have become very disappointed with Dragon. Their current offerings are, for me, just not worth the money anymore.

Yeah, these new crunch-only flavorless articles are utterly pointless and useless. Just stuff them in the Compendium/CB and note what got added each month. They don't even qualify as articles, just bland lists of crunch....

I really wish they'd drop this and go back to the old longer articles. I don't mind a month with nothing that applies to my current characters if it has good longer articles with nice fluff I can enjoy just plain reading, or even use to inspire a new character.

Amen. I loved articles like the ones on Bane and Raven Queen, and I never used (or cared about) either of those two before reading those articles.

Unfortunately, I think you are being generous; this was a declared, conscious decision to go to a format of a lot of really short articles.

I've submitted one 2,000 word piece to Dragon and am working on another. One advantage of the format change is that having more articles per issue makes more room for new voices to be published, which I hope to see more of!

I agree that brevity is one of the most difficult things to do well, and makes doing a short piece as effortful as one more than twice as long. Working within the shorter format requires really getting the most out of the aspects of the crunch that help tell the story of the fluff, like the descriptive text for powers. In the first one I did, I used a brainless formula of putting all my words of fluff up front as an introduction to the crunch. This time I think I'm using those words more efficiently by having them divide up and explain the meaning of each section of powers: "faction X focuses on harnessing the energies of nature," etc. As people often say, 4E plays better than it reads, so without these explanations the good ideas in a short, crunch-heavy piece may be hard to pick up.

So if my experience is any guide, we'll see the quality of the shorter articles improve as people learn to work in the small format.
