[Dragon] First D&D 3.5 Update

Aitch Eye

First Post
I'll post this separate from the rest of issue #304's contents, as it might divide up the conversation more efficiently.

The general goals of the revision are: 1. Options, not restrictions (stuff from support products and player feedback made part of core rules.) 2. Tools, not just rules. 3. Rules the way you play them.

It mentions players asking the R&D team about harm, polymorph other, and the skeleton and zombie templates posted on the website. It doesn't answer those questions, but they apparently were thinking about them.

The updates will will be written by Ed Stark, and will give examples of the types of revisions they'll be making, grouped around a theme with an example from each book. This one focuses on character generation.

PHB: Racial Benefits. The example given is exotic weapons specific to certain races, like the Ugrosh. Dwarves now have "Weapon Familiarity" as a racial ability, which lets them treat it as a martial weapon.

MM: Monsters as Characters. Will have material on playing certain monsters as characters, though not as detailed as that in Savage Species. There's a sidebar giving the information for the ogre (though it's not clear whether it's final or complete).

DMG: Prestige classes. Will include the Spellsword, an updated Dragon Disciple, and a few world-specific classes (just as examples of how to do them) including the Red Wizard. All the current ones will return, but it sounds like they might be considering some changes. They've separated PrCs into seven roles: race, party role, situational, iconic, game function (does things other characters can't, like the Spellsword), transformation (turns into something else), and world-specific.

Have subscribers gotten their copies yet? I haven't; I saw 304 in my FLGS tonight and snagged one just in case something went wrong with distribution or with my account.

My copy just came Friday afternoon, which is around the same time of the month it usually does. I'm usually one of the earlier ones to get it (which is how I fell into doing the summaries). I'm surprised it's at stores already.

It seems to me that fiddling with the races was more than most here expected from 3.5. I'm not against it, but it potentially makes the backwards compatibility more problematic.

That said, I'd love to see Half-Orcs get Weapon Familiarity: Orc Double Axe. Three feats to use a weapon effectively is way too many. Half-Orcs are probably my favorite PHB race, but I've yet to play one with a double axe as it just isn't practical. Even a Half-Orc Fighter with the prereq's couldn't start out with EWP: Double Axe, Ambi, and 2WF.

Can't wait till my copy arrives!!

Defense Bonus and Reputation would, I think, be FAR to large of a change.

Though this is more than I expected, it's not too bad yet...the only mechanics mentoined are that some races can use some weapons more easily...which makes perfect sense, and doesn't affect balance in any meaningful way.

And more things added to the SRD is a Good Thing in my opinion, so YAY GLUT! :)
