Dragon Kings: A Spiritual Succesor to Dark Sun?

I'm a prog-rock guy, but not much a Dark Sun guy... I always thought of it as having a punk aesthetic. Mystara... Now that's prog. Capes, gnomes and topographic oceans abound. Still, very interested where this goes. Hope it does better than Kevin J Anderson's work with Roswell Six and Neil Peart.

Cautiously optimistic. Biggest fear is that if setting has everything in what I want to see in a spiritual successor to Dark*Sun, Hasbro would send out the lawyers to shut them down and take the material. I sure hope those who worked for TSR back then are very familiar with their contracts and legal decisions involving IP, contracts and previous employment.

Second biggest fear, the setting is the successor to the After Kalak Era.

I would imagine the system will be similar in feel and tone but not history. Probably leaving enough holes that you could easily move Dark Sun stuff over and it would fit.

I loved Dark Sun as presented in the original box set. Then TSR blew up the setting with the first novel series by Troy Denning and it was never the same since. The revised Dark Sun setting for 2e was terrible, especially the way they tried to water down the setting and hit everything with the nerf bat. It lost a lot of the magic for me after that.

4e Dark Sun was surprisingly awesome. The best Dark Sun products since the original boxed set, IMO. And 4e fit Dark Sun better than the 2e mechanics for me. And way better than the 3e Dragon magazine version Paizo did, IMO.

I'm curious about this, but a big fat "meh" on the music piece. I'm not much of a music guy. There are literally zero songs on my iPhone.

I'm not sure how well "D+D" and "Music" will blend together.
I am, however, a HUGE fan of Dark Sun and Brom's art.

So file me under cautisouly optimistic as well.

I'm quite the opposite. I deleted most of my apps to make room for more music and I'm quite annoyed it's impossible to store more than about a third of my collection on it. We almost always listen to music when roleplaying and I mostly get to choose what we're listening to. During combat I definitely prefer all kinds of metal, the rest of the time it's mostly post rock or progressive songs. To lighten the mood and to avoid some of the players complaining I'll also play some indie pop/rock inbetween.

I'm not much of a fan of soundtracks, though. They usually get on my nerves pretty quickly because of the repeating themes.

My first associations with Dark Sun, though, would either have been Stoner Metal (aka Desert Rock!) or Doom, not so much Prog.
