Dragon Magazine Cover Remakes

Peaceful day at the beach until a dragon turtle comes out of the water. Sure the original cover didn't have a dragon turtle coming on the beach but I wanted to draw a dragon turtle. You might recognize elements of the cover used in my DMGuild's title Dragon Turtle of Stormwreck Isle. The nice thing about putting things on different layers is that I can remix the image. Granted the scale in this image is very different. Maybe this is when the dragon turtle is grown up.

This one I've held off on posting until Wildspace Magazine 3 was out. Wildspace Magazine is a Spelljammer fanzine. A contributor asked for a giff, rastipede, and xixchil. I had a female giff but decided to draw a new one. Rather than distract from my Dragon magazine cover project I looked for a cover I could place the trio on. The cover doesn't evoke the same feel as the original since you probably spend more time looking at the characters instead of the sword.

I mean, the sword is still bad-ass and covered in yellow energy!

The only thing missing is that the ... umm... thri-kreen (which one was that in Spelljammer?) should be using a stick to poke at the sword, like the shirtless guy in Elmore's painting. Because only a foolish adventurer would dare touch a glowing magic item with bare hands. Er, claws? Appendages. We'll go with that.

😁

It is a xixchil. They are matis people like thri-kreen but perform surgical changes to their body.

Yeah probably should have added the stick. However there are foolish adventurers at least for a short time. :)

For this cover, I replaced the monster with an eye of the deep. If you have seen my other images you will know I am a fan of beholders. The sailor was replaced with a minotaur. I tend to think of them as sailors due to Dragonlance.

I believe I was asked for #261 on this forum. Unfortunately I didn't really have any idea what I wanted to do differently so I didn't do that one.

How about a cover set in Greyhawk 2000, the technologically advanced version of Greyhawk? What are the derro hiding in the sewers? Dwarves are replaced with derro. Instead of putting the chest in a well, they are putting it into the sewers.
