The power of a support class isn't in what it can do but in what it can enable other PCs and the group as a whole to do. And the support classes are also much more effective the larger the group is, so their utility is even more dependent on context than for the other classes. Lastly, like RigaMortus2, many players don't like to play support characters.
It's like playing an NPC. Beginning of combat the Bard begins singing giving everyone pluses to hit and damage and can just walk away, get something to drink, watch TV, and wait for his friends to call him back when the combat is over. Of course I am exagerating, but this is what it feels like (to me) sometimes when playing those characters.
