Dragon - to renew or not to renew

Just don't be like me.

I'm one of the foolish ones who let his subscription run out, didn't bother to renew, then ends up buying every issue off the rack. I pay almost $12 per issue, and for some idiotic reason, I still haven't renewed.

Yep, and that's one of the other reasons I renewed. I wasn't sure I wouldn't end up buying it at the newstand anyways paying way more than if I had just renewed it!

I rarely use anything out of it but I love getting it and will continue to do so.
It is nice to get another something to read that is connected to the only hobby I have.
Most issues have a least a thing a or two that is very interesting, some that are moderately interesting and an item or two that doesnt interest me but does broaden my horizons :D

I used to get both Dragon and Dungeon but I let the subscriptions expire about 5 years ago. I went back to Dungeon about a year ago (once I heard Polyhedron was gone for good) and I've been extremely pleased with the product. I haven't gone back to Dragon though.

Generally speaking--last time I subscribed to either was in 2002--I found more to like in Dungeon, rather than Dragon. I was been thinking of resubscribing to Dungeon though. I have a thing for adventures*

*and settings, I wish there was d20 Settings Bi-Monthly :p

I started subscribing to Dragon just before the rerelease last year after many years of not bothering. I've found that, over the past year or so, every issue has had at least one or two items that have gone straight into my game. A few issues have three or four, but, I think in the past year, only one hasn't had any. Really, that's about all I expect from Dragon. Even if I'm not using tidbits in the game, it's still usually a pretty good read and occasionally there are some real gems. I reupped so I'm obviously in the "Get it you fool!" camp. :)

I've only purchased a couple of issues since the Class Acts thing started and I haven't been overly impressed with the magazine. Especially with the price increase. I'm sure this has already been argued to death, but with all the advertisements in there, I can't see a good enough reason to raise the price above $5. I've never bothered with a subscription, but with the way Dragon is now, I'm glad for it.

If the content you use or like is limited to a few issues a year, you're better off just getting those select issues and maybe just reading through whatever else comes out while at the book/hobby store.

Like Rasyr mentioned, the fact that you're even pondering this should help you decide. Go with your instincts and let the subscription run its course. If the next few issues after that are worth getting, then you might consider subscribing all over again.

Just keep in mind: If you buy more than 5 issues a year from the shop, you're better off with a subscription.

I've bought a few issues of Dragon over the past couple years and I have to admit that I don't find it useful to me. Its too full of new feats, spells and prestige classes for my tastes. I prefer the magazine back during the late 1st ed/early 2nd ed days, when it was chocka with articles about how kingdoms ran, nobility worked or how to design a city...etc. Its moved on and I understand that but if more new rules and options aren't your thing then don't bother. Save your money.

I wouldn't subscribe anymore.
