Dragonkin and Thri-kreen LA

First Post
Recently my DM told me I could make a character using the XPH. So I did. It was a Psionic 1 Thri-kreen. It took me about a week since I had only skimmed the XPH befor this and I prefer to read up on something befor I do it. The party was almost to level 4 all around so my character would start the game at lvl 1 with no negative levels.

Turns out the DM hadn't really read the XPH either so when he saw my character he said that he was way too powerful even for a +2LA. So he restricted me to only +0LA races. It would have been nice to know this befor I spent a week building a character but thats not what I am posting about.

Do you think that a Thri-kreen is only a +2LA race or is that an understatment?

This is my first time posting racial traits so I'm hoping I am formatting this right.

+2 str, +4 dex, -2 int, +2wis, -4cha
Monstrous humanoid type (immune to humanoid only spells)
Size: Medium; speed 40; darkvision 60
Immune to magic sleep effects
+3 natural armor
Multiple limbs (4) each with 1d4 claws; can take Multi-weapon fighting (two-weapon fighting) and multi-attack (same but for natural weapons) feats
Poison bite 1/day 1d6 dex and paralysis
weapon familiarity (2 racial exotic weapons)
naturally psionic (1 power point at first level)
Psi like abilities 3/day --chameleon, know direction
1/day --psionic displacement, metaphysical claw
2d8 racial hit dice; BAB +2; saving throws Fort +0, Ref/Wis +3
5x(2+int mod) skills
+4 hide in arid regions
deflect arrows; + one bonus feat

Languages: Common, Thri-kreen + bonuses.
Favored class: Ranger
LA+2

Another race that I came across is Dragonkin. I know that my dm wont allow this race as is just because it is too powerful.

The stats for dragon kin

+8 str, +2 dex, +2 con, +4 wis, +2 cha
Size: large; speed 20; fly 40 (good)
Natural attacks: 1d6 claws, while airborn a full attack adds rear claws to the attack with full attack bonus. Detect magic(Su) at will as a sorcerer whos level is equal to the dragonkin's HD.
Racial HD 7d8, BAB +7, Saves Fort+2, Ref/Will +5
10x(2+int mod) skills.
3 bonus feats
+7 natural armor
Languages: draconic + bonuses (bonuses include common)
Favored class: Barbarian
LA+2

These both seem pretty close as far as relative LA goes but it looks like they should be a bit higher.
Opinions? Comments? Flames?

-edit: forgot the reason I posted this in this forum. How would you go about nerfing these races to be +0, or at least +1?

Your GM may be right about the Thri-Kreen. It has two Monstrous Humanoind Levels which grant it two hit dice. It's level adjustment is +2. When figuring ECL you add the race's base HD to the LA and add all class levels. Technically a 1st level Thri-Kreen is the equivalent of a 5th level human.

Using the formula a 1st level dragonkin is the equivalent of a 10th level human.

The thing is with LA, is it don't take into account that it should be very hard to roleplay went playing a Thri-keen, or an strange race. you need to think like an insect.
Your DM should take this into account when looking at the LA.

He should balance the races he found too powerfull with much harder rolplayin. With a insect way of thinking you don't want money you don't adventure but you hunt.

Role playing any unusual race would be hard if we were actually role playing. The DM has described our campaign as "go out and kill things" (he used more words than that though).

I would like the chance to role play a giant insect hunter who left home because he needed to get away from his own kind to practice his developing mental abilities with out harming clutch-mates (if he accidently harms an elf then oh well, everyone outside a clutch should be kept at arms length and seen as an enemy).

Anyway, could any one try and nerf either of these races and bring them down to level 3 or 4 instead of 5 or 10? I'm thinking just remove the monster levels and they would both be acceptable.
