Dragonlance 30th Anniversary!

Dragons are photo bombing in each picture

LOL. Great art from the period; the concept was innovative even if the adventure design was a bit of a letdown.

It it me, or is the article a bit rose-colored-glasses exuberantly positive? I never played it but I thought the reputation of SAGA Dragonlance was pretty horrible. The Dragonlance movie certainly was horrible.

Dragonlance novels shaped my perception of what D&D adventure should be like.

I wish they published the an updated war of the lance adventures for 5e, never had a chance to play them.

Fun stuff, I cosplay red and black robe raistlin at cons (red the first day and black the second day to see if anyone gets it). Dragonlance is pretty much the go to setting if I'm not playing my own stuff. Infact im about to rev up a 13th age Dragonlance campaign. Man, I love dragonlance. If 5e started up support with the setting they would instantly convert me.

I wonder how many people got hooked on D&D thanks to Dragonlance? I certainly did.

What at an opportune time to release some material or make an announcement of some sort.

Yes, it is a bit of rose-coloring to their glasses. I loved the original trilogy when I was in high school when it came out. However, I remember going to read it again maybe 10-12 years later and thinking it was only so-so, at best. Nothing all that special.

(same thing with old school D&D - 1e/2e - I loved it at the time I played it, but looking back, it's not really a great system and has a lot of inconsistencies that I probably would not tolerate now that I'm older and wiser (or, old & tired).

SAGA's "horrible reputation" comes mainly from people who
  • didn't like the fact that it had to roll with the changes made by Dragons of Summer Flame,
  • didn't like that it wasn't AD&D anymore (after AD&D DL had withered and died two/three years prior), or
  • were exposed to it primarily through the rather underwhelming initial tie-in novels.

For those who wanted what it was trying to do, it was actually pretty well-received--it won Games Magazine's "Best Adventure Game of the Year" for 1996.

We are celebrating Dragonlance's 30th anniversary this year over at the Dragonlance Nexus (version 2.0, under construction!). Also, be sure to check out the Dragonlance Legacy facebook page, where the creators are telling their stories of what happened.

As for Tanis, he may come across as a ranger, but he hasn't shown a lot of ranger abilities. For example, no ranger spells. *shrugs*
