Dragonlance Campaign Setting: Missed Opportunity?

I don't know if I am a minority, but I liked the feel of the DLCS and the post War of Souls feel it had. For the first time I could actually see myself participating in this world and not feel overwhelmed by the war of the lance series or the war of souls series.

I got the book fairly recently, and I enjoyed it. It had the major stuff I wanted (info on Knights and Wizards) and the world info I needed. The only thing I would have liked better was the history more consolidated in the front of the book, so I had a better idea.

In comparing it to the FRCS... I can't really say, since I didn't read most of the FRCS. It was a rather large, dry textbook to me. I liked LGH Gaz a bit better, since I liked the write ups for dieties and such, but the book lacked game info mostly.

It is if that's what you want in a campaign setting. I think for most people that buy settings, that's true. That's always been the FR's strength, and it's source of popularity, as near as I can tell.
I think that the people buying campaign settings, like the people buying adventure modules, enjoy that tremendous amount of information until they go to use the product. Detailed information or a detailed plot can make for an interesting read, but it's not a great jumping off point for your own adventures.

And that's one of the (historical) complaints about Forgotten Realms, isn't it? That they filled in all the nooks and crannies where you could fit your own ideas?

I think the 3e FR book certainly does do this; it's a giant book of hooks. Exactly the right thing to do with the setting, IMO.
I agree; a big book full of hooks sounds perfect.

The new edition of the FRCS doesn't fill in every inch of the setting. The areas that are detailed are done in a way that it only give hooks and adventure ideas. The FR is vast enough that it would take many books to cover even plot hooks for every interesting site previously detailed in earlier editions and in the novels. Older editions gave way too much information, WotC got it right with this edition.

Nope. I happily buy both, and use both extensively. Never had a problem.

If only that were true. It's a (historical) invalid complaint. I have all the FR books, and never encountered any problems with inserting my own ideas.

No idea why some people seem to struggle with it...

For myself, it's not a matter of struggling to adapt stuff. It's like I mentioned with Tinker's & Kenders above, it gets tedious buyiong products and then ignoring all kinds of material from it because it's useless.
I buy game products for the plots and such, so when the metaplot goes overboard, there really isn't a lot of reason to buy stuff.
