The idea of "canon" can be useful, but faithfulness to canon should never get in the way of telling a good story, IMO. Of course, what makes a story "good" is highly subjective. As a fan of Dragonlance fiction from early on, I have to say that the original two trilogies of books (Chronicles and Legends) have not aged well for a variety of reasons. The fiction (including later Weis and Hickman novels) that followed those series were all over the map in terms of quality, but probably never better than "slightly above average" (and often quite considerably worse than that). None of the gaming materials were all that great -- certainly, none of the DL adventure modules are remembered as fondly as other adventures from that era. Still, I have a lot of fondness and nostalgia for DL and I feel like there's a niche for a war torn world with clearly coded good, evil and neutrality where your party can get swept along in conflict with a whole LOT of dragons. I'd love to see a new War of the Lance adventure path, reimagined to use modern design principles and be less "on-rails." This should also include character options that fit the modern game like the ones here, which aren't perfect but seem like a good start. Some sacred cows from the fiction will necessarily have to die to make this happen. If that means Kender are magical and all of the arcane classes can be "Mages" of High Sorcery, then that's fine. It's not like Krynn hasn't already been soft-rebooted more than once (in very disruptive ways) to move it from one game system to another. Nothing that WotC could do to move DL into 5E could possibly compare with the Age of Mortals/SAGA fiasco. The core of Dragonlance is war, dragons, and mortals being used as pawns by the gods in a huge battle to tip the balance of the world in favor of good or evil. Everything else is just set-dressing. Just give me a good, fun story that I and the rest of my gaming group can enjoy.
