Will Dragonlance be 5th age, 4th age, or multiple timelines?

Hi there!

The Dragonlance Campaign Setting, written by the Sovereign Press staff and published by Wizards of the Coast, will focus on the Fifth Age period after the War of Souls (the latest major storyline in the novels, but also provides the tools necessary to run campaigns set in the early Fifth Age and the time of the War of the Lance.

We will offer continual support for the post-War of Souls era, moving forward with the novels from Wizards of the Coast. But we will also release products to support various eras of play. Our first major sourcebook, Age of Mortals, adds onto the core book and provides detailed information for any Fifth Age campaign. Next year we'll release a similar book on the War of the Lance and have products to support it. In the future we might feature supplements covering the Age of Might, the Legend of Huma, and others!

The War of the Lance is the timeline that will be the focus of many of next year's products, starting in August! It was important to us to move forward with Dragonlance and provide a setting in which the player characters can truly be the heroes, instead of covering a time in which the most important deeds were accomplished by the Heroes of the Lance.

I don't know if I'll run a DL game right away (running two FR games now), but I look forward to buying and reading what comes out.

Seems to be a LOT of cool potential in the Minotaurs gaining a foothold on the mainland.

I too would prefer playing during the War of the Lance or even pre-cataclysm (can't remember what age that was). I find it interesting that this quote;

It seems to me that the "important deeds" taking place during the War of the Lance have already been written about (my main beef with the Dragonlance world). However, if I I understand the first quote, then the "important deeds" in the Age of Mortals are still going to be taking place in novels, you just don't know about them yet, because they haven't been written.

I am not at all a fan of Dragonlance 5th Age, personally I can find all sorts of exciting stuff for my players to do during the previous ages and not be overshadowed by the Heroes of the Lance. I'll have to wait and see on the sourcebooks, but this isn't going to be one I rush out and get.

It seems to me that the "important deeds" taking place during the War of the Lance have already been written about (my main beef with the Dragonlance world). However, if I I understand the first quote, then the "important deeds" in the Age of Mortals are still going to be taking place in novels, you just don't know about them yet, because they haven't been written.

I think that one of the things you'll find out about the War of the Lance is that there was a LOT more going on than what was happening in the novels. The sourcebook is not going to be a "Tanis and Company did this on day one, and on day two they did this, on day three they did that..."

As for the "future," and moving forward...we have Margaret working with us, as well as the Dragonlance authors, so we're not going blindly into the future...and yet, we're also going off in separate directions...what happens in the novels will be touched upon in the games, while what happens in the game will be touched upon in the novels...for example, in the trilogy of adventures I'm currently working on, they will take a party of characters through an epic (not Epic) quest that's going to have a major impact upon the world...and will be touched upon in the novels...without either one straightjacketing the other.

Now, now...the DLCS does cover that era, you know The DLCS provides you with the tools necessary to play in any era, and there's lots of other interesting "crunchy" and "creamy" bits as well...

The War of the Lance is a hugely popular era of play, and one that is well-suppoted with just the core book (the "DLCS"). We wanted to move forward with Dragonlance with our initial products, however. By Krynn's timeline, the War of the Lance happened several human generations in the past. The War of Souls was the most recent trilogy and is being followed up by other stories that move the story forward--by authors such as Richard Knaak, Douglas Niles, and Margaret Weis. Sorry that this disappoints you, but if the War of the Lance is your Dragonlance bread-and-butter, than you'll be really pleased starting in Summer 2004.
