I mean, let's be serious, I don't know about the 5th Age NOVELS, but for us GAMERS, the 5th Age was never THAT popular...

Very true...because of SAGA, a lot of Dragonlance gamers were disillusioned with what became of the world of Krynn. That's one of the things that Margaret & Tracy tried to repair with the War of Souls trilogy, moving the world forward so that there are now lots of things going on that provide adventure seeds: the rise of the Minotaur Empire, the return of the gods and magic, the fate of the elven peoples, etc. Many of the Dragon Overlords are dead, the world is once more revitalized... but, either way, everyone does have their favorite period, mostly the War of the Lance era.

Our first products are moving the world forward, it's now been almost 70 years since the War of the Lance...if we focused on that first, then we'd probably end up polarizing the fans of the novels and the gamers even more...the DLCS and Age of Mortals book does a pretty good job (in my humble opinion) of bringing people up to date on things, so that even people who have never read any of the Fifth Age novels can still find interest in the setting.

Happy birthday for this weekend. :)

I don't think that it was just the change to the SAGA rules that turned DL gamers away from 5th age, but also the changes to the setting. I never really understood why it was changed. Was there a need to bring Chaos into it, and to send the gods away again?

The aftermath of the War of the Lance was a perfect time to start campaigns, with a clear slate to play with.

Still, DragonLance is the best setting around so I for one are really glad that its coming back. I may not buy the 5th age books, but theres the campaign setting, DM's screen and the Bestiary of Krynn this year to start with.

BTW, is there going to be something with the DM's screen? An adventure or something?

Hey... I'm a GAMER, and I acutally prefer the 5th Age over the War of the Lance era.

Many of our books, like the Towers of High Sorcery, will address issues across all of the various Ages and eras of Dragonlance. From the founding to its dissolution to what's going on in the "here and now."

The Age of Mortals, like the War of the Lance book next year, focuses on one particularly era to flesh it out in full and give the tools necessary for people to play. Except for the adventure trilogy that I'm writing, most of the sourcebooks and materials are going to be suitable for any era of play.

The Dragonlance setting has the unique quality of having its earliest published time period remain popular and sought after, as opposed to the Forgotten Realms which has more or less left behind the pre-Time of Troubles Faerun. The popularity hinges on continued success and sales of the original novels, and the closest the Realms comes to this is the Icewind Dale trilogy. I should think moving Krynn forward would be as successful as moving Faerun forward, with new developments and adventures opening up to keep the setting alive.

I have a feeling that in many ways the post-War of the Lance setting wasn't really the most exciting time period. The war was over, the conflict had been more or less resolved, and the good guys had won. Dragonlance is a setting that began with a war in Chronicles, and it's not always interesting following in the footsteps of the Heroes of the Lance in peacetime. :)

That said, if you really want to replay the original modules, or set your adventures after the War of the Lance, Chris and Jamie have said there's plenty of support in the DLCS for that. And there's also almost 20 years of older material that can be used for reference while you wait for 2004...

Cheers,
Cam

One of the beauties of Dragonlance is that it is, in many ways, a setting of settings.

While it is one setting, Dragonlance is a world with a rich history to it. There are several eras of play, including the War of the Lance, the Chaos War, the time of Huma, the Cataclysm, the pre-WoS Age of Mortals era, and the current time frame (War of Souls and beyond).

Any sourcebook should be complete enough to give a basic overview of the current time period as well as a good overview of historical time periods.

From there, you have sourcebooks on the various eras of play that can flesh out the details of the time.

As the gentlemen from Sov. Press have said time and again, the DLCS will give you enough info to play in any era. You're also getting era-specific sourcebooks as time goes on.

The DLCS is the foundation-piece of Dragonlance, upon which 3e Dragonlance materials will be built. From the DLCS, you'll see sourcebooks detailing the various aspects of Dragonlance, including era-specific books. If one era interests you over another, that's fine. Everyone has their own preferences.

The beauty of the DLCS is that it sets you up for any of those era-specific books that you want. :)

Oh lookie, it's Cam and Dragonhelm. *waves* :)

Many of our books, like the Towers of High Sorcery, will address issues across all of the various Ages and eras of Dragonlance. From the founding to its dissolution to what's going on in the "here and now."

Sorry I just have to ask (and someone is bound to at any second anyway): will the Towers of High Sorcery feature up to date stats for..umm..Raistlin? There, I said it. Up to date as in 'stats that explain how exactly he managed to take out gods'. Okay, you can start throwing your spellbooks at me now.
