Dragonlance question...

I think that one of the things you'll find out about the War of the Lance is that there was a LOT more going on than what was happening in the novels. The sourcebook is not going to be a "Tanis and Company did this on day one, and on day two they did this, on day three they did that..."

That's what I've always assumed. The novels brought to light the significant details regarding the actions of the Heroes of the Lance, but there was always a hint that other things had occured and were occuring. The War of the Lance was not some little engagement in an isolated part of the continent, and the Heroes of the Lance couldn't be everywhere at once.

I look forward to the War of the Lance material, it has always been the era I've enjoyed.

You'll just have to wait on that one. Originally, DoSF was supposed to be three books...it got cut down to one. Don't ask. So, there's a lot that was going to happen that eventually had to happen behind the scenes. So, I wouldn't be too surprised if we did go on ahead and did something on that, although right now, it's not on our schedule...not yet, anyways.

The Dark Queen began her "war" long before the Heroes ever started...so we'll probably go into quite a bit of depth on the time leading up to the War...but, we haven't even written the outline for that one yet, so don't quote me!

We'd definitely like to do sourcebooks covering quite a few periods that have only been briefly touched upon...such as the one's you mentioned. So, yes, but no definite dates as of yet! We've got a lot of material to cover!

And you'll have to ask Jamie 'bout specific dates That's his job!

I've been playing in dragonlance for half my life (about 10 years now) and have never ever had the urge to play in the wotl or post wotl era. Its been done in the novels.

Thats why i loved taladas and the fifth age. Wide swathes of playing field untouched by novels. And now the post WoS era looks to be more of the same.

Cmon folks, DL is about the setting, not the system. Even if someone were to convert it to something like FATAL or RIFTS i'd still play it, so long as it was recognizably DL. Some of you might say that fifth age isnt DL, but then i have to ask, what about taladas? Dragonlance isnt what it is because of a formula where heroes go from solace to neraka to sanction to palanthas and back. Its a search for faith and spirituality. DL is all about deciding how you want to live.

Now what i really love is that all paths are acceptible. The christian moralist has the war of the lance to draw on, while the eastern spiritualist has the fifth age and the internal strength. Hell, it can easily go the other way too.

Post WoS will be awesome because all 4 paths to inner power are there, and easily accessible. Forget the heroes and the dark queen, and start looking at evangelicals versus new age yoga instructers =)

Heh. it seems that every DL related post i make goes back to religion, but like i told tracy at gencon, Dragonlance is directly responsible for bringing me back to my hindu faith, so its hard for me to separate the two =)

The Dragonlance Campaign Setting, written by the Sovereign Press staff and published by Wizards of the Coast, will focus on the Fifth Age period after the War of Souls

Whooo boy. I would definitely pick my DL launch setting to be the one that 90% of gamers dont care about and most havent even bothered to read. Heck just set it in Pern instead. Nobody would know any better.

I think the naysayers of the current time period need to pick up the War of Souls trilogy and give it a read. Because the world as it is has exactly the same campaign elements of a War of the Lance campaign plus Knights of Neraka, a Minotaur threat on the mainland, a few Dragon Overlords (Lodoss Wars anyone?), elves with a serious incentive to kick some ass against evil, the Legion of Steel for neutral knights, Kender that are not pigeon-holed into the happy-go-lucky motif, and a serious need for heroes.

What does the post-War of the Lance era have that the post-War of Souls era doesn't? The shadows of the Heroes of the Lance and a general all around sense of relaxation after a major war where evil was put down. Is that really the best era to campaign in? If so, then the DLCS and late 2004 is for you.

For me, I can't wait to jump into a world with all the elements of Dragonlance I fell in love with (Towers of High Sorcery, Dragonriding knights, the moons, the gods, draconians, Qualinesti, Silvanesti, and Kagonesti elves, kender, and all the rest) plus all new and exciting twists, organizations, and possibility for adventure.

I'm counting the days till August 1st and the release of the new Age of Mortals mega-adventure.

Still I would enjoy seeing a Raistlin that can feed Elminster his Eversmoking Pipe and make him enjoy it. I hope he has some abilities that reflect his status as Master of Past, Present, and Future.

so you'd rather they just retread the same crap over and over? Dragonlance has moved way beyond the war of the lance. hell, its been TWENTY YEARS since it came out! What is there left to say? DId forgotten realms start their third edition campaign by remaking the greybox? Cmon now. Virtually every setting has advanced their timeline to reflect on the changes in the rules and the changes in the world. Why should DL have to sit through the same crap? Not only do you alienate the true fans who stuck through the setting from 1st ed through SAGA and now, you alienate the older gamers who have seen the war of the lance told four times before, in the original modules, the tales of the lance box, the Dragonlance 2nd edition reprints of the original mods, and the 25th anniversary SAGA version.

And now you want a third ed one too? Why? Is DL not allowed to move on?

Let me clue you in. THE HEROES WON. THE GODS CAME BACK. there. the war of the lance is long gone. Let it die, and let dragonlance live without this baggage.
