Dragonlance: Towers of High Sorcery, anyone know more?

Which direction was that? I don't recall War of the Lance treating him too badly from the quick glance I took at the book (though I couldn't seem to find the rogue knight class he had levels in).

The only problems I've had with Soth's development are Weis & Hickman's trying to sneak him into Dragons of Summer Flame, and then that awful chapter with him in Dragons of a Vanished Moon.

The direction they took WAS giving him Rogue Knight levels. He should have had Blackguard levels coupled with Knights of Crown, Sword and Rose. (Possible a level in fighter and a few in Aristocrat)

(Rogue Knight is a Pr-class founded in Age of Mortals Al.)

Yeah those two were kind of weak...but then they couldn't let someone like Lowder have fun with Soth in Ravenloft for some reason. :p

Ranger,

If I didn't already have a copy, I'd say send it to me.

Rogue Knight works better as a fallen KoS. It assumes that all of the KotC, Kos and KotR are lost and convert over to Rogue knight after falling per the rules.

And the Rogue Knight honour bound one-on-one fight with the BRUTALLY NASTY result if you try and flank him works well for Soth.

Soth was not a Blackguard.

No?

Why not? I mean he betrayed his vows, he turned his back on the goods of good, and basically dissed all things good.

Why shouldn't he be a blackguard? Because blackguards cast spells?!

*still doesn't buy the fact that a fallen KoS CAN'T be a blackguard. :p*

Thanks. It says something that I own that book and didn't recall that.

Having gone back and read the rogue knight description, I think there's an unspoken line in there that basically says that rogue knight replaces blackguard on Krynn. That's just my guess. Basically, it follows almost all the same themes, right down to offering bonus powers if you have levels in one of the Knight PrC's, and letting you trade in levels of those for rogue knight.

I'll honestly never get why. All of the Ravenloft material that I saw for Soth was top-notch. As it is, it's a pity that we'll never see some of the other material that James Lowder wanted to do (or started to do) about him, such as his short story "All the Colors of Sorrow" (which roughly corresponds to When Black Roses Bloom, and has the roses of Sithicus turning black), or Shadow of the Black Rose, which would have been the third novel, taking place after Soth had left; it wouldn't have featured Soth, but would have explored Sithicus in wake of his leaving, seeing how it felt with only his metaphorical shadow there now.

Ranger,

If I didn't already have a copy, I'd say send it to me.

I'd say the same thing, except for me it's because I'm broke. ;)

For the record, a "Thomas Conrad" has expressed interest in buying the book. If I hear from Neo before 6pm Thursday, I'll give you first dibs, but otherwise I'll gladly sell to Mr. Conrad.

By the way, I also had a close encounter with Weis and her company friends at Buca di Beppo's in Columbus during Origins. She sat the table over from us, and our groups mingled as we ate. Great restaurant, too.

I dunno how one NPC's statblock can dictate your impression of an entire book (especially when your criticism is so subjective), but War of the Lance has gotten almost universal praise from DL fans. I'd recommend it to any DL gamer in a heartbeat.

Bought it at Something Wicked in Evanstone for $15.

Worth it at that price but like most of the DL books, it's cover price is a little high.

I emailed you earlier on the subject, but just in case you didnt receive it, I appreciate the kind offer but fortunately my FLGS had a copy on the shelf, whcih they have since put to one side for me.

So by all means allow Mr Conrad to procure your copy, I very much appreciate the kind thought though. :)

Well it didn't dictate so much as lower my respect for things DL. But that's okay. If DL fans want it, that's fine. I bought it hoping to see stats on my favorite Pre War/Post War of the Lances peoples.
