Dragonlance

The setting is blending the two, and moving on to a totally new story arc, which is kinda like 5.5 age. A lot of the things that were contentious about the fifth age are slowly being phased out, which in itself is causing more contention, but if you've ever harbored the thought of getting back into the setting, now is the best time for it =)

I think Legends was the best series of them all.

I liked the original Chronicles though (and I'm running a Chronicles campaign, with the original characters). What I didn't like is all the other series based on them... it just got kinda tired after awhile... the only ones I liked where the Chronicles, the Legends, some of the Tales short stories (the one with Tas and the teleporting ring was great)... The Second Generation wasn't too bad, and Dragons of Summer Flame was okay, but I think it just went downhill from there. They just killed off everyone interesting and tried to create interesting characters to replace them as the lead characters, and failed. And then they tore down everything that made Dragonlance what Dragonlance is... the took away the gods again, they took away the three moon and the magic they granted and basically undid everything the Chronicles and Legends had built up.

And the newest trilogy they produced... ehn... it was okay. I was kinda disappointed though. There were just some parts and some plot devices that they used that were bothersome and a bit tired.

Whoa . . . nostalgia trip. I started reading Dragonlance when I was 11 (it was my intro to D&D). Anyway, I stopped reading them when I was 13 on account of the fact they were too much like Archie comics. Here's the model:

Tanis Half-elven: (or Tanthalas, that's how many books I read!) Kind of goofy anti-hero, who has few to no redeeming qualities, and yet has two drop-dead gorgeous women falling all over him. Clearly he is Archie Andrews (note the hair colour).

Kitiara Uth Matar: evil chick. She's selfish and ambitious, but soooo pretty. Veronica Lodge, anyone? Again, the hair colour motif.

Lauralanthalasa Solostaran: damn that's a long name. far too long. Right, this is the blond-haired, goody-two-shoes, next door neighbour (literally) Betty Cooper type.

Right, I could probably go on, but it gets a little stretched after that. Anyway, this post is half-jesting for anyone who can't tell, so if you like Dragonlance, please don't take offense.

Does anyone know what happened to Nick O'Donohoe? He used to make me laugh . . .

I do. I'm gearing up to read through the main books again. Not one of my top favorites to read, and it's a little weak in spots, but not a bad read overall.

I quit reading the first book after a hundred pages. I found the main characters boring and stereotypical, and (this really annoys me) better at everything than secondary characters. And they seemed like they were working from a script. They didn't seem real to me (no, not even Raistlin). I particularly disliked the two barbarian people, Riverwind and Goldmoon, and that chick in the tavern.
That's because the character were originally designed as pregenerated character for the various modules. This was at a time when large playing groups (like about 8 or so), weren't uncommon. So Weis and Hickman pretty much had to write the story using pregens which were essentially typical generic D&D characters.

I realize that they have tried to come back to D&D roots, but I haven't purchased any of the recent 3rd edition DL stuff. Is there setting geared more to 4th age or 5th age?

The core DLCS (Dragonlance camapign setting) is based on 5th age, but whats in there is easilt adaptable to any era of game. So far SS have released Age of Mortals (5th age) sourcebook, War of the Lance sourcebook, and next year they have a Legends era sourcebook planned.

What they have done is perfect so far, and their products are well worth checking out.

Um, I liked Taladas, does that count?

I think it should. ;) Taladas was the first setting I ran as a DM, and I still like the ideas behind it today.

Running a game set in Taladas also got me into the novels as a kid, but it's been so long since I read them that I don't know if they still be to my tastes now. I remember reading and thoroughly enjoying the first dozen or so of the books, but I don't think I read any more of them after that.

When I picked up the Ansalon sourcebook, I was a bit disappointed -- it wasn't as cool as the books, and I thought Taladas made a better setting.

Taladas is the best dragonlance product ever released. the only thing that even comes close is the new War of the Lance sourcebook, which is excellent in its own right.
