Dragonlords of Melnibone

I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions on this book. Stormbringer and the Elric series are some of my favorites in fantasy, but am unsure if Dragonlords is worth purchasing.
Could anyone give me some good points/bad points on it?

Good points:
Cool critters. Good information on the series.

Bad points:
WAY out of balance with the rest of the D20 system, and, WAY out of balance with the rest of the D20 system.

Like C. Baize said its way out of balance with anything else even remotly d20. But, if you aren't going to mix in anythnig else its not a bad rendition of Elric's world using d20 however magic using characters will dominate the game. I prefer the Original Stormbringer personally but I won't trash this version like others have (on other boards, not here that i know of).

It was the very first D20 supplement I bought. I almost swore off all 3rd party supplements at that point. Happily, however, I found the Vigilance supers game and was mightily pleased. I've been a 3rd party slut, ever since. :)

Basically, no, it's not worth buying, unless you can get ir really really cheap (which you almost certainly can).

Basically, if are you familiar with Elric!, the game, DLOM is probably 90% the same text. Which would be okay, except Chaosium didn't do a very good job of translating from BRP to d20. Rather than altering the d20 system to fit the Elric novels or magic system or anything like that, they do the other way around.

Thanks

I found the book on a Half-Price Books shelf for 5 bucks. With your comments, I'm still torn. My gaming group won't play any other system, so the D100 thing is out of the question.
But then, it would be a self-contained game world.
*sigh* I can't make up my mind.

For 5 bucks, ... yeah, it's worth it. I wouldn't go much higher than that though.

Setting Stuff

Hi all!

For $5 dollars, it's a decent buy, if you need setting write-ups for Elric's world. However, nothing mechanic-related in the book works at all in a balanced or even well-considered manner. It wins hands down as the worst d20 conversion.

The list of atrocious design botches is impressive, including shoddy balance in character generation, endless errors in NPC and monster stats, absurd critical hit rules, waaaay too expensive summoning rules, and unbalanced direct reproductions of various BRP features. The whole effort seems to have been a "cut & paste" from Stormbringer with minimal and incompetant d20 design considerations.

I'm a big fan of various Chaosium products, but this game was awful. If you need a setting write-up, then this game has some utility value for you. If you don't, then don't waste any of your hard-earned cash of this shamefully haphazard book.

Thanks for reading.

Yep- I agree with this. I was given the book when it first came out and immediately recognized it as basically the Elric! book with minimal changes in text and stuff. Yeah, the d20 stuff in the book is poorly done...really poorly done.

I'll add my 2 cents. This is the one book I can look at on my shelf and say "Why did I buy that?" and not find a single good answer for. Take your $5 and buy some dice, comic books, or miniatures. You'll get more use out of them.
