The rust monster nightmare appears to feed on magic, not just metal. In the case of a monk, I suppose it would eat the enchantment right out of his fists. Can't look at the article right now (will when I get home, though) -- for those of you who've read it, though, a question:
What would said Rust Monster Nightmare do to a Monk whose had his unarmed strike enchanted?
That is a great ecology of article. Great fluff, great new monsters, and encounters with maps. Seriously, that is how an ecology article should be designed.
Interestingly, experiments have shown that in the
absence of metallic substances, rust monsters seem
partial to mammalian blood as a food source. Many
experts believe that rust monsters are therefore
naturally susceptible to a form of vampirism. More
preposterous theories claim that mammalian blood
contains metal! It is undisputable, however, that
when no other natural form of metal is present, but
an abundance of blood is nearby, the rust monster is
drawn to the blood as if it was metallic.
I, too, am looking forward to the revenant article.
Hehe, I always love science being mixed in with my fantasy so I laughed/smiled at that as well.My favorite part of the article had to be during the discussion of the rust monster's diet (at least I found it very funny and makes a lot of sense; its a good integration of science into a fantastic setting):
And in a DM-centric article they even threw a few bones towards the players with some new alchemical items. Kudos.
