Dragons: how do they carry treasure?

Don't forget that dragons seem to quite often get henchlings to do the dirty work. They could either have a tribe of dumber humanoids worshipping them that they can manipulate, or possibly just manipulate the greed of other creatures to haul the loot, then have a hearty supper once they're done ;)

I prefer this option:
2. They carry loads of gold, silver and other coins and small gems etc. in their mouths or other orifices.
I think dragons will mostly simply swallow everything they find and disgorge it when they're back in their lair. The stomach acids will make sure everything's nice and shiny afterwards ;)
This seems highly unlikely in the case or Red Dragons since things might melt in their fiery maws.
Just because they have a fiery breath weapon doesn't mean their insides are like a furnace. I think it's comparable to a flame thrower. They just spit some liquid that bursts into flame when it's ejected.

If you don't like this approach, there's always rituals: Something like Tenser's Floating Disk or creating a temporary teleport circle.

3. Dragons' scales are prehensile, and after they knock off the dwarf caravan carrying gold coins (or whatever the score is), they roll around in the coins like a cat on catnip and can effectively grip all the coins, small gems, etc. Since almost all Dragons are greedy by nature, one might argue that this was simply a natural part of their evolution.

I'm reminded of the Council of Wyrms campaign setting from 2nd Edition. There was an island old dragons went to to die. I remember reading that the recently deceased would have coins lodged between their scales.

I always figured that dragons used something like matched teleportation rings, or maybe a specialized Gate spell, or used minions to haul their treasure. Or, perhaps, they have an innate magical ability to temporarily create extra-dimensional spaces to haul treasure. Otherwise I never actually worried about it.

They could just carry a container of holding of some kind.

Clearly this is where the "other orifices" bit comes in!
