Dragons no longer a threat?

I do like using them as more of a threat,so i don't want to over use them. i also don't use the Tecnicolor dragons so i like thinking out the appaerance of each one.

Soon the players will encounter a balefire [ just fire that looks sickly green ] spewing blackscale dragon with a numb venom tail stinger.[ if a fort save is failed you don't feel the tail attacks damage for a minute, this sucks cause you may not even notice you are about to die from the wound you don't feel yet]

I fall in the category of: Don't use Dragons unless utterly neccessary.

Ya see dragons are at the top of the foodchain. They have bigger and better things to do than run around randomly killing things. The ones that live long are powerful, strong, arrogant, and down right nasty. the PC's in my group have faced One green dragon and half the party has ran away screaming when she landed. They are in awe and plotting to kill her but they have about 8 more levels to go (or so they say). They know my stance: Dragons if present are MEANT to be there for they have a purpose and not some random encounter.

They are lords of the sky, masters of their lands, and rulers above all creatures. Fear them and you will live longer, disrespect them and face a shortened lifespan...

Thanks Azure. I didn't think of it at the time of original posting...

My 3E DM has rocked us more than once, and at several different levels with intelligently played dragons. Give them enough room to use their maneuverability and play them wisely, and a proportional CR dragon can be a very tough opponent. This is particularly true if they're supported by minions or mates.

In our game, we've fought an actual dragon once, a young one with extra sorc levels. We've run into their minions a lot, and a great many half-dragoned things, as the last female died a long time ago, and so there aren't any more true dragons coming. We're fixing to have to hunt one down...which should be fun, given that his modus operandi is that he runs away.
