OSR Dragonslayer RPG truly delivers.

So compared to OSE, how would those who have played this rate Dragonslayer? It looks cool, and well laid out in reviews, but does it do anything different other than having a Monk class and maybe some other classes? It still B/X at heart right? The big thing that would stop me from running this is the standard magic system, as I'm looking for something with a bit more danger.
Sorry for the late reply; I've been on vacation!

I've noticed over the years posting about OSR games that what one person considers "different enough" varies widely. Take Shadowdark for instance; in the same threads you'll see people complaining that it's just a carbon copy of B/X and others that wont even give it a look through because of how radically it departs from B/X! 😄

That said, I don't particularly like to compare it to B/X myself since I feel like it has more in common with AD&D. This of course makes it similar to B/X (and completely compatible), but I feel it has enough rule changes (many discussed on this thread) to set it apart.

It's two main draws for me are its:
  • Killer old school artwork.
  • Understanding why Gary's vision of D&D" is "read D&D" and needs to preserved.
