Dragonstar and multiple realms

Anyone play Dragonstar as more of a "multi-realm" universe, rather than a "monolithic" universe? I would much prefer if they had gone for multiple competing realms, rather than one massive realm. Maybe some minor realms that are independent, but would take too much resources to conquer, thus maintaining their independence?

Something along the lines of Traveller or Star*Drive. That'd be nice....

The Dragon Empire is only 1000 light years across. this is a small spherical space in one of the galaxys spiral arms. It isnt monolithic, and the game is kind of founded around the dragon empire...

Not only do you have the rest of the galaxy, but also infinite alternate Primes which could potentially open up contact. :D

IMHO, having a single Prime plane is sufficient.

Having a monolithic empire still leaves plenty of doors open.

In the Star Trek universe, the Federation might be considered 'monolithic'. While rival empires have challenged it and seriously threatened it, for the most part it is monolithic. Most of the time, the heroes of the shows aren't dealing with these major enemies ... usually they get caught up in a conflict with some Galactically Inconsequential Alien Race of the Week (tm), or multiple GIAROTW's who don't like each other much, or some humanoid culture resembling ours but with a some kind of horrific twist ...

This kind of arrangement isn't so bad. If the heroes botch their mission, life as we know it (from their perspective at least) isn't going to change overmuch. Sure, there will be a major war once or twice in their lifetimes, but most of the time they are dealing with isolated incidents ... par for the course for the average adventuring party (YMMV).
