Drawing a dragon out of his cave.

Hey ENWorld!

In my next session, my players will have to bargain with some wizards so they can cast a high level ritual for them. But they have no way to pay for the spell, so they will have to do something in return.

So I was thinking this morning and thought that an encounter with a dragon 5 - 6 lvls higher than the party should make for a very exciting encounter. The players have only to distract the dragon and draw him out of his cave, so the wizard can get in and steal a magic item.

But here's the thing: how do I make this encounter exciting? What kind of abilities the player will use? They can't just enter the cave and run away, because that would be a dead giveaway. Also, what kind of fun terrain I should use? I really want this to be a careful encounter, where they may use even their skill mid combat.

The party is lvl 7 and is composed of a Ranger, a Paladin and a Fighter.

Thanks for your help!

You could make it into a skill challenge using Bluff, Diplomacy and Intimidate for social skills. There could also be a Stealth element into getting the Wizard into the cave - even Athletics (i.e. moving rocks for the Wizard to hide behind).

Terrain would really be dependant on what type of dragon it is. For example a White dragon could use cold / icy terrain to its advantage whilst a Black dragon might leave Acid pools to drop the PCs into.

The only thing I would be careful of is if the party has only three members (with limited healing) an encounter on a level 12-13 Solo could end up in a TPK. A dragon of this level is going to be hitting at +17/+18 vs AC which is probably on a roll of 5 or higher for the Ranger.
