Dreams In The Deep

Peering through the door and a bit of the rooftop around it, you see that under the door is a stone staircase spiraling down into darkness. You pull on the ring, but it doesn't give - but just as you pull, you see some light spill into view, as if from a lamp or torch. Apparently someone is coming up the stairs.

Pollock steps around to behind the hinges on the door, in position to ambush whoever is coming, and continues to watch with his X-Ray Vision.

Mere moments later, the door swings up a ways and a bald head peeks out for a second, and curses at the rain. The person stands there for a second and you hear him fiddling with something, a clinking sound, maybe metal against stone. A second later he starts to climb up onto the roof.

Using his X-Ray Vision, still, Pollock watches the man through the solid door. Once the man has come out he takes action.

In a silent, languid leap, Pollock jumps over the hatch's door and brings his elbow down hard on the man's neck in an attempt to knock him unconscious before he even sees the monk coming.

OOC: Hopefully this works! Attacking for subdual damage (remember that Monks take no attack penalty when doing subdual damage instead of regular damage).

Like a cat, Pollock leaps over the trap door and the open stairway, bringing his elbow down like a sledge on the man's neck. The man barely has time for a grunt before he falls down unconscious.

It is easy to see that he is a clergyman of some sort, as he's dressed in similar robes to the priests and monks at the abbey, although these are much more worn and faded. Slightly more than middle aged, bald, and bearded, he holds a large piece of red cloth in one hand.

The cloth is completely red, about four feet on a side, and has three reinforced holes across one side. You figure it's a banner of some sort.

Stuffing the banner in his bag, Pollock moves silenty onto the stairs. He pulls the "trap" door shut behind him and if there is a latch, he latches it.

He then carefully and silently starts down the stairs, trying to remain as alert as possible.

Moving silently down the now rain-slick stairs, you pull the trap door shut and latch it. The door is only about a third as thick as the beams of the roof. The bald priest's lantern hangs on a hook near the door, illuminating the staircase. They're rather steep, and turn 90 degrees to the left about a dozen steps down. Peering around the bend, you see a small room, dark except for the faint glow of the lantern above and behind you, with a single closed door directly across from the stairs:

There are several other banners hanging on the wall, all different colors. The only sound you can hear right now is that of the rain softly falling on the door above.

Pollock moves back up the stairs to grab the lantern and sets it on the floor of the "banner" room about 5 feet inside the base of the stairs, so that there will be some light in the next room when he opens the door, but hopefully not a bright (noticeable) light. He then scans the banners for any signs of trouble or items of interest. If there is nothing, he will remove the banner from his bag and put it on the empty hook. Then, leaving the lantern where it is, he'll listen at the next door.
