Anyone out there playing JD d20? If so, please speak up and describe your game. I might work out a story hour for mine if there is any interest.

Spug, yes!!!

Hey Hellbender,

We've been having a blast with JD. Our campaign has been your typical team of 3-5 Judges, investigating unusual mutant activity in the Big Meg.

We followed the Incredible Ham ( a fattie mutant) to his lair, discovering that he was part of a conspiracy of mutants to ressurect the super heroes of old.

The whole conspiracy was led by The Commissioner, a Judge Academy drop-out and secret mutant! And my character's brother!

Along the way, we busted an illegal bingo operation, fought some Klegg mercanaries, and trekked through the Cursed Earth.

It was a total blast and we can't wait to play again!

PLEASE write up a story hour! Since the JD Street Sim went away, I've been desperate for my Mega City 1 fix. ;)

It is on its way. I am also working on the Black Company d20 page, but will definitely have the story hour for Heavy Dredd up and running soon.

Will do. I have a session coming up this weekend that will definitely be a keeper. My Dredd is the high octane Bisley-esque flavor. I really enjoyed the more extreme 'Dredd by Bisley' and the Dredd/Batman crossovers (including 'Die Laughing') as well as the Lobo/Dredd crossover. I love the inherent mindless brutality of these versions of Dredd over the gimicky sarcasm variety. Be prepared for higher impact Dredd! I have one player who is too funny and made a perfect leap from DnD to Dredd and he has a ball with the game.

Hellbender,

We can't wait! I agree with you about the brutality vs. sarcasm Dredd angle.

Though with the RPG, being a "team thing", it could be interesting to have both sorts of players in the group. For example. in our Judge unit, my character is very "by the book" and more sarcastic than violent.

My wife's Judge, on the other hand, is like a wild dog just dying to bust loose and tear things up. It makes for some nice roleplaying moments, while still keeping things "very Dredd". It helps that our GM makes sure there is a time for everyone to have the "spotlight" in his games.

Your D&D veteran players sounds like a blast! It will be interesting not only to see him knock the teeth out of the criminal element in the Big Meg, but also how the other Judges around him react to him. As far as the reaction of the public, one of the great things about Judge Dredd (for me) is that Judges have a lot of leeway with what they can get away with. No oneis going to listen to a single citizen complaining about a Judge. :)

I know I am gonna' get burned for this, but I have to say that the only experience I have with JD is the movie.

But after reading your posts I am now gonna go check out the game gook. Do you guys know of any good sites that really catch the essence, perhaps some of the storylines, of the series?

You won't get burned at all. The movie was strange as it was somewhat faithful to the comic storyline wise, just the acting was atrocious, and there were many quirks (Dredd would NEVER take off his helmet, no matter what). There are quite a few places that sell the Fleetway/Eagle comics. There are quite a few graphic novels as well. Judge Dredd is a pretty brutal and bleak take on civilization in the future, and sometimes, it looks like we are headed in that direction.

Maybe these will help:

As previously stated, I prefer the Bisley-esque style of Dredd, lots of mega-violence and dark humor. There are much lighter takes on the genre. Mongoose does an excellent job with the game, from fluff to crunch. Just please, don't take the movie as even a hint of the depth of Dredd and Mega-City One. No matter how anti-establishment you may be, there is something fun about being a judge that busts perps and creeps and freaks and hands out sentences the way hari krishnas hand out brochures.

Drokk!

Hellbender beat me to it, pretty much across the board.

And yeah, the movie was not a good movie, but it wasn't a bad look at Mega City One either.

Try this link as well:

And while we're talking Dredd websites, does anyone know a good site where I can find out more about the ABC Warriors?

There is also an excellent YahooGroup for Judge Dredd:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Dredd/

Members include Matthew Sprange and John Caliber (writers of the d20 game, and John Caliber also has alternate rules under his Cast Iron system).

As far as ABC Warriors, John Caliber mentioned doing write-ups for them on the list. On the web, they are covered on the official site, but there aren't many websites regarding the ABC Warriors, which is a shame, as they are very interesting characters. You can also check out the 2000AD webring sites:

Hope I was of some help,
hellbender
