Drink a Potion Defensively

Droid101

First Post
Can you drink a potion defensively? This came up in our game. Under the "Special" entry in the description of the Concentration skill, it doesn't specifically list "Drink a potion" as an action you can do defensively, but it does say "actions that provoke attacks of opportunity."

My DM ruled that the guy got to make a Concentration check, but he failed anyway. I was just wondering what you all thought.

The Concentration description refers to spells, spell-like abilities, and skills, but it explicitly says: "This doesn’t apply to other actions that might provoke attacks of opportunity." Drinking a potion would be an "other action" so you cannot do it defensively.

Your DM is always right, but in this case he was slightly less right than he could have been. :)

Full Defense

You should be able to use a Standard Action for Full Defense (or fighting defensively) and use your move action to drink the potion. At least you would get an AC bonus against the AoO.
