Re: Character Wealth by Level

I don't want to be to "low magic" for my players, but how does this sound to all the DMs out there?

DMG p.145 Table 5-1 (Modified x3/4): Character Wealth by Level

Sounds bad to me, as a DM and as a Player. But you asked. ;)

What's bad about it? Other then the fact you don't like low magic campaigns.

Personally, I don't use the guidlines, I just make a conscious effort to keep the magic low. But if you feel you need guidlines that;s not a bad way to do it.

Personally, I avoid the tables for treasure gains. I use it for players when they are makign a character, though. When it comes to items, I just pick items that I feel will help the Pc's during the adventure, or if I know there is somethign they realy could use. If they do not like the item they may sell it for half price. It seems to keep them at a good level of magic items. But I guess that's just my style.

I like to keep things fairly balanced in this department so that CRs aren't overly easy or way too hard. Also, if I track each PC I can assure that no single PC is left out or too loaded. I just like the idea of my chart to encourage the magic item creation feats and to discourage trying to find that Magic Item Mall for Munchkins (oh no! not that term again!).

Also after checking this chart, I noticed that while I was winging the magic items gained by my party, I was WAY too low, trying to keep things low magic. So far, they have overcome most challenges with ease though. I'm still in the creation stage of my next adventure and realized that they might not overcome some of the CRs that will be thrown at them.

That's good if you want POOR charachters. However that effectivly makes non-magical items more expensive too. If you only want less magic, multiply the base price of all items by some constant (4/3 would be strictlly equivalent) This makes it harder to get a magic sword, but not full plate armor or other non-magical items.

Another problem, everything has to be masterwork this and masterwork that. With a silver piece being a common worker's wage and enough to feed his family, even if barely, I don't think my characters are anywhere near poor. Look at the Table as is and as I have it. It's not THAT different and by no means are they poor. I'm thinking 6,750gp at 5th level per character ISNT POOR at all.

Other than that? Nothing. But like I said, he asked. :)
