DriveThruRPG is down. Does this happen often?

I just spent $32.00 on Ptolus goodies and now I can't download?!?

I guess I should have shopped at EN World instead..

Didn't you hear? All the same site/place now, thanks to the big merger. RPGNow, DTRPG, RPG.Net store and ENworld Gamestore. Yup, that merger sure was a good thing.

Here's hoping it's not down for a month like RPGNow not so very long ago...

Welcome to yet another reason I don't buy .pdf's.

When I spend money on a gaming product, I can carry it right out of my FLGS that minute. No waiting for shipping, no sites being down preventing me from downloading, just simple cash & carry (and you can't download dice and minis).

Obviously, being a PDF author and retailer, I can't help but feel you're being hideously foolish - there's some incredible products out there. A minor outage is no different than the FLGS being out of stock, though a major outage is something else entirely.

And unlike the FLGS, which is great all by itself, if you need something right then, you can grab it and print it out.

Not interested in a print vs. PDF argument here - and folks starting one'll end up ignored for awhile - because both avenues serve their own purposes and have crossover as far as customers go. I'm just commenting, admittedly sourly, that putting all the eggs in one basket means that when the basket tips over...well. Look for yourself. Diversity is good.

DTRPG servers are hosted in a business park in GA. RPGNow servers are hosted in a remote server location in Texas.

DTRPG power blipped yesterday around 2:40pm, but didn't ever come back on for the server room and some other rooms (kitchen, men's room, etc.). Well, it was kind of on... enough to power a lightbulb to the point where it would provide light (though just barely), but not enough to power a computer. Calls to Patillo resulted in a busy signal; a call to Georgia
Power went to automated voicemail.

At least there is a redundency with RPGNow being up. You should get your order filled by our staff as soon as they catchup as erorr messages are sent to custserv.

Or, say, the FLGS being closed for the night, or because it's Sunday, or a statutory holiday, or anything like that.

I have to agree that refusing to buy PDFs because a site may not be available with 100% reliability is silly. During the vast majority of the time when the sites are accessible, they are accessible 24 hours a day, from anywhere you can find an internet connection.

Thanks, DriveThruRPG!!

Thanks for the reply, it shows how great a business DriveThruRPG is, and how they care about the consumer.

I got all my downloads and man, I can't thank you guys enough for the speedy email response. It really means a lot to me.

I really overreacted to the site being down... but I had to get my hands on my Ptolus goodies!! Ptolus rocks!!

Thanks again, DriveThruRPG!!

LOL, I just posted something similar in the Publishers forum because I didn't get one of my DriveThruRPG purchases.

Well, that's one reason, out of many, why I don't buy .pdf's.

It was just that it actually came up about sites being down. The whole "anywhere you can find an internet connection" thing also implies being able to get easy internet access (many of the pro .pdf arguments assume that you are very centered around life at your computer, but if you don't have wireless access, don't like reading documents on a computer, don't like to pay for things using debit/credit and strongly prefer cash instead, and don't actually game anywhere near your PC they lose a lot of their appeal).

ditto

I've never... ever... had a problem getting a download from a PDF. The site being down is a fluke. Normally, when you buy a pdf you get the download link right thin and there. Not sure why the poser waited to download it. A site being down is the same thing as when your flgs closes shop to go out of lunch or closes up for the night. If you don't use PDFs thats your cup of tea but don't dis the industry with a lame reason. Sometimes I like PDFs, sometimes i like books, all the time i like supporting enworld.
