Drop-kicking the fighter classes...

If I want to do Any sort've combat damage in melee, I have to play a cleric. Or be a rogue and get killed. That sounds pigeonholing, to me.
I'm not implying a system-wide replacement of fighter classes, that would just be silly. I'm just wondering how well a party that replaced their fighters wholesale with clerics would fare. I think some of the points raised here point to "sub-optimally" being the answer, but it was a thought.

I almost feel stupid for saying this (since no one else has brought it up) but IMC, you don't get the second, third, fourth, etc. attack until your class bonuses stack to give you one, no matter what STR you have.

Therefore, the way we play it, clerics are much weaker in combat because the other guys are attacking 2 or 3 times a round, the cleric once.

Try it and report back. :)

Not to mention that a while a fighter gets his second attack at 6th, a cleric gets his at 8th, and a fighter/cleric gets his at 7th.

I think this all depends on the camaign context.

Sorry, but a fighter is not a fighter is not a fighter in a world where magic permeates every action. Harn means fighter good. Mage the Ascension means fighter very iffy.

Standard GH or FR - in other words, your average campaign.

Well, perhaps more specifically, I was thinking at the time 28 point buy, access to FRCS and Magic of Faerun, because that's currently my choice of construction options when DMing - not sure if that's likely to make much difference to the overall picture. I suppose the greater range of gods, spells and feats would for a class like the cleric, though.
