Faerie Fire doesn't work with darkness. I wish it did.

Yes. It doesn't work anymore in 3.x rules. But it is the reason why drows ever had the combination in earlier versions so I have always houseruled that the combination still works together.

Yeah, changing darkness to drow darkness with that one change, and making it how both their innate ability and the spell works for them is a simple change.

And I like hitting the designated pincushion with FF, even if it's not really necessary. It gives that extra bit of "oh, crap!" to the proceedings.

Well, I think it would be pointless to use Faerie Fire to pinpoint a character that everyone can already see in a close combat!

Spotters use it to make sneaky types visible.

Or you can use it to light up targets for ranged attackers who are further away, out of darkvision range.

So out of curiousity, how did it work exactly in earlier editions?
