Seriously, we played last Friday with my 3rd level elven druid and his large wolf - very handy, but not game altering. I checked with my DM beforehand and made sure he was aware of the debate. Besides, wolf will need every little bit of help until my druid gains enough levels to grant him some additional bonus HD.
BTW I took Mounted Combat feat and had an exotic military saddle made for him. I try and keep him out of trouble, with him being an animal companion and not another PC. That is, I try not to abuse the situation.
