New to the forum, so bare with me.
I've felt since I first rolled my half-orc moon-moon druid, Khrom Ironbraid, that there is a static limitation in the way that shapeshift works. It basicly boils down to "Khrohm see animal, now be animal" a linear and unimaginative mechanic. And if your DM doesn't include a random beast-encounter in your campaign you will have to plead, with hap-hazard results, to get a natural progression in your core mechanic.
-"Uuh, we haven't met a beast since the wolf at level 2, back when we raided the raiding raiders...is there any chance of Khrohm seeing any beasts here in The Unholy Grave-nest of the Nec-Roc?
-Sure, your see a Hippopotamus, it looks confused
-But the MM doesn'the have a...
-Whatever...let me check...CR3...Killer Whale it is then...
-Eehm, thanks?
The game seems to be built around the fact that the druid has seen every animal in existence(MM) which makes for an weird lowlevel Druid circle/ Zoo/ Jurassic Park upbringing.
The following link is a pdf in a Dropbox, as re-writing it all with my phone would be tidious, with suggestions on how to make the mechanic more immersive, with a wider set of creature types open for turning and the addition of a misshap-table.

I would like some general response and some suggestions on the mishap-table and of course have a reasonable discussion on balance. If there is any combination that might be overpowered, see if you spot the same creature, as me, that tips the scale.
tldr:
+More creature types.
-Complex mechanic.
-Mishap-table.
