Druid not 'prohibited' from using non-druid weapons

I apologize if this has been addressed already, but it's new to me. I find it amusing that the v3.5 druid is able to use a non-proficient weapon without the same prohibitive penalties he faces for using non-druid armor and shields.

(I'm also a little miffed that my "veterinarian" cleric now loses his Animal Companion beasties under the v3.5 Animal clerical domain. But that's another thread topic.)

Take the Leadership Feat at sixth level (or ASAP) and then awaken your animal companions, treating them as intelligent cohorts who can understand Common, or another language you know (Druidic being a great choice, as no one else can understand it). Once your "Cohorts" have maxed out their animal levels, you can train them to be Druids, too (even if their WIS is too low for spellcasting).

That's exactly where I'm going. I have 3 hawks 5 wolves and 5 trees all awakened and the Leadership feat.
My grove will rock all night long.
