Druids in Space?

:)

I love the Druid / Terraformer idea posted earlier as well. There's also the obvious "Avatar" sort of references.

My character concept -

Background for Space Druidism

Secrets protected by a sacred Order as old as time itself. The order was at once one and many known only as the Keepers. It is recorded that the Keepers were believed to be witness to the "birth of light" and the subsequent formation of Time. However the Keepers are a mystery of such deep time that their true nature has been lost.

As the universe expanded, the Order branched out and flourished. Secrets were passed on throughout the Cosmos and in an instant, the Order, once one and many, was now a countless multitude. These secrets are thus scattered across the whole of the universe and found in all things. True knowledge is gained by the study and understanding of not the crude science of things, but the inner Spirit of the Keepers that is only now beginning to be understood.

Background "microwave radiation" is the song of the Order, the burning flame at the core of stars it's beating hearts, and the multitudes of solid matter hurtling through space are where the "Knowledge" has coalesced and brought forth life in all it's variety.

There is but one enemy - the darkness of the Before. The Pit without Time and the Rip in the Fabric of the One. Crudely referred to as "a Black Hole" these weakpoints in the vast expanse which the Order both spread it's knowledge and also became are anathem to the Druidic Order. That which exists as nothing and devours the knowledge of the Keepers and the Order.

Druid Character Class

Eternal search for knowledge and the quest to piece together the many splintered fragments of the secrets once maintained by the Order. The character is at once a physicist, cosmologist and spiritual guide. All recovered "truths" are guarded and handled with great care by the Order. They speak their own densely coded language through use of cranial implants that employ heavy encryption routines and which will interface with both the clandestine files of the Order and with other nearby Druids.

Cybernetic implants are not uncommon as a Druid is expected to be both one with cosmos and able to exist in a physical form that can explore even extreme reaches. Some specialize in certain environments (both planetary and deep space) or many and their cybernetic implants allow them to function in soem of these extreme environments.

Utilizing their direct access to clandestine files of the Order, they are often thought to be "wizards" by the less informed. Knowing the heartbeat of a certain star, or the frequency of a pulsar, or maybe the movement of the plates on a planetary body has its advantages - both in sheer knowledge AND knowing how to exploit these events to manifest great wonders.

All I got off the top of my head : ) Left out any animal companion business, heh.

For "D&D stereotypes in space", I recommend the Dragonstar setting, even as a reading. I don't remember exactly what are druids like there, but in general, it meshes fantasy with space pretty well. You can even play a regular D&D character who accidentally discovered that there are world beyond his own.

Other thoughts- Space-Druids:
  1. would have been freaking out in The Fifth Element.
  2. created the black monoliths first seen in 2001: a Space Odyssey
  3. might be responsible for spreading life forms- especially sentient ones- from planet to planet. Panspermia, anyone?
  4. might support life in truly isolated sacred groves. http://marvel.com/universe/Gardener_(Ord_Zyonz)
  5. might operate genetic banks keeping the DNA of rare or even extinct species. Lost World In Space!

That's funny, she doesn't look Druish.

Ok, that out of the way. I would imagine that a druid of space would have to be in tune with an entire solar system or a galaxy. Someone who would ride the solar winds and talk to comets. And somehow tended to the birth of stars and the formation/prevention of black holes.

Heck, the idea that a space druid is trying to turn a star into a black hole in order to make a new nebula would be a campaign in itself.

No really, it is a serious question!
Does a Druid fit into Space Opera?

If the answer is yes, how would you portray your character concept? If the answer is no, is it because "It just doesn't fit?" I am sincerely interested in believable concepts for these characters that fit into a space opera setting, much like Star Wars.

It toally depends on the setting. As you mention Star Wars has Jedi, so druids aren't too far a stretch for space opera setting.

Nice work people. Thank you very much!

I probably should come clean: I'm one of a few 3rd Party Publishers working on their respective version of what is to become a space-opera Pathfinder. I have some ideas and ideals that I wish to pursue and one of key aspects of this project to generate some suitable space-opera alternatives to the existing base classes in both the PF Core Rulebook and the Advanced Player's Guide.

It was coming along nicely, but I had hit a snag when I got to Druid, so I started this thread for ideas and went on with the others. I think that this thread has convinced me that a Druid-type character concept is possible for the setting. Most importantly, it seems to be unusual and interesting enough that people might actually want to play one.

Feel free to continue to contribute to this thread, the more concepts I can garner, the better definition the resultant class will become :)

Alls I need now is a name! Something Druid-y. Perhaps something futuristic-y, Fading Suns/Dragonstar/Star Wars-y or even science-y. You get the idea..... ;P

It is late here at the moment and I need my bed. There are a few things I'd like to respond to specifically, but that will have to wait for a few hours.
More soon!

It also depends on how the setting works. Like in Spelljammer where everything works different and its entirely possible for beyond huge creatures to survive in space, such as the spelljammer ship itself.

I would assume these druids work to preserve these creatures and preserve the Great Spheres and such.

For a "Normal" space concept i would guess druids would be about preserving and protecting the void and its inherit freedom from those would seek to control its nature
