DS: Closest thing to Pool of Radiance?

OTOH, if you can put up with a GBA game, they made a version of Eye of the Beholder for it. But unlike the PC version of Eye of the Beholder, it's got the tactical Gold Box style combat. Still a dungeon crawl though.

I have this game for my DS and it does fit all of the criteria you want. Of course, it's a GBA, so the graphics aren't as good. It also doesn't have much of a story but there is one.

However, the combat is exactly what you want. Grid style, turn based combat. Further, there is a safe haven, at least one, that you can base from but then you have to remember the mazes and how to get back to where you were.

Really, the only bad thing about it that I know is one save. Otherwise, if you played and liked gold box games, this is it.
