DU4: First set you have to have multiples

For those of you who like Wizards sets of dungeon tiles, I just picked up the new set DU4 Arcane Towers.

In the past I have always been able to work with only buying one copy of each of the tile sets. However fot the new set you pretty much have to have two sets of DU4 to make any sort of consistent tower.

So if you go out to buy the set, be sure you pick up two copies of it.

To describe the problem more fully: the core concept of the set revolves around the ability to construct round rooms with a diameter of 12 squares. These rooms can be constructed from four tiles, each of which represents a quarter of the circle. All four tiles have the standard dungeon floor on one side. Two of them have ramparts on the reverse side, and the other two have windows on the reverse side. So you can create a basic round room with one set. To create a round room with ramparts all the way around or with windows all the way around, you need two sets. Or you can use one set and pretend that the ramparts on half the tiles are windows and vice versa. (Two of the four relevant sheets of tiles can be seen in the excerpt.

Note that the set also includes four pieces that constitute a ring you can place around the 12-square-diameter round room to increase the diameter to 16 squares. The depictions on the various sides of these annulus pieces further complicate the issue, but again you need two sets if you want, for example, a complete 16-square-diameter area surrounded by ramparts.

Personally, I'm going to make due with one copy of this set, since I'm not sure how often I'll want to construct round rooms anyway.

Soooo, you'll need more than one set if you want to construct rooms the set doesn't easily support . . . .

Not sure how different that is from any other Dungeon Tile set.

I can definitely see the utility of purchasing multiple sets of this one, as it may be a while before we get another set with round rooms, but I wouldn't say you have to purchase multiple sets to make this release worth while.

You could probably say something similiar about the outdoor tile set, as it is fairly unique.

Crap...that means I still have to do the same thing I always do and buy 1-3 copies (or 4, in the case of the wilderness set.) :)

Can't wait to get some of these...but I have to :( Payday isn't until tomorrow.

I've always found two sets to be nearly necessary. I'm hoping to see a Dungeon Delve with these new tile sets.

I just hope to see one that doesn't use Hall of the Giant Kings...the only frickin' set I never got (no cash at the time) and it's in a TON of those delves.

I guess I see this as different.
The main focus of the set is the round rooms.
In fact it is the majority of the content on 4 of the 6 pages.

IMHO: One side of each of those sheets is going to look odd on a fully round room unless you pick up two of the sets....

It's actually enough of an issue that the sample maps put at the back of the dungeon tiles pack are shown as having two sets. That's the first time I've ever seen that happen.

I'm not saying don't pick up one set, I'm just saying be aware that you might have to consider picking up two of the sets if you want to get full use out of the tiles.

I just picked up a second set (There are/were still copies for sale in my area) about a month ago. I didn't buy delves, but there are a ton of useful dressing/setting pieces in that set. It's really the best set they've made(that I own).

Does Arcane Towers have a good assortment of "dressing" tiles since that's my primary desire from a set?

Let see out side of the round towers I see:
Sheet 1:
a bookshelf ,Elevator???, Pit, books dumped out on floor
Sheet 2 and 3:
Spiral staircases
Sheet 4:
A small hallway with runes on the floor (red or blue), Small magic circle (red or blue)
Sheet 5:
2 magic portals, 2 Wizards work table, a bed, a few ladders, few cabinets, trap door (open/closed), green slime some castle walls with crenulations.
Sheet 6:
Large yellow magic circle, Large wizards workroom (table, bookshelf, etc.)

So that's what you get.... (sorry can't post pictures as I'm not near my scanner)

Worst thing about this set is that they have gone back to not thinking about what is on the reverse side of tiles!

We have new 3x2 tiles with one and a bit of the tiles cut off in a curve, and some of them have doors. None are opened. WHat happened to the "turn tile over, door is opened" idea?

Then, all the dressing things are really messed up - we have a bed, and three sideboards. On the backs of each other. So you can only have two out of the four items.

And what is with having ladders on the back of ladders? Stairs on the back of stairs?? It's the same thing on either side, why make it double-sided??

Rather disappointed, so far :(
