I'm thinking that looks like Kingdoms of Kalamar Player's Guide.

I'd suggest to go 4 fighter levels for WS goodness.

power attack/cleave/great cleave/imp sunder

dodge/mobility/spring attack

weapon focus/weapon specialisation

blindfight

combat reflexes



Seems to me that there are plenty of effective ways of building an effective fighter without having the expertise/improved trip/disarm options. Just go for it. Play him dumb with a low Int and enjoy it.

You could use a pitchfork (trident) if you want to go the farmboy route, instead of the scythe.
