How sci-fi? Star Trek sci-fi, Dark Angel sci-fi... are we talking in space, or on earth... what time period? Details people details!

It's a combination western/sci-fi. The Firefly in the title is a type of space ship. This one happens to be called Serenity. The crew are basically outlaw mercenary types. They smuggle, steal and whatever else to make money, but they are the good guys and really only steal from "those that deserve it." Kind of like Robin Hood.
I've watched it from the beginning and I really like it. It's created by Joss Whedon (Buffy & Angel) and has the same kind of feel for characters and dialog. I should also point out that in my opinion, Buffy is one of the best written shows on TV right now.
KenM is correct in that it does not seem to be doing very well in the ratings. This is probably because it is a little strange. While everybody is flying around in space ships, they talk like they are in an American Western and the society seems very American Western also. So far I've really enjoyed the show and tape it every week so I don't miss it.

Yeah, I was just starting to get into this show. It was hard getting past the whole spaceship vs Western theme, but it had grown on me. Apparently Fox was showing the episodes out of order and the first episode was the least favorite of JW. You actually got to see that the technolgy level is higher in other places, it's just on the outer fringe worlds where the Western theme is strong. Since the Serenity's crew are less than shiny citizens it makes sense that they're hanging out there 
Anyway, Fox has decided not to renew the show, but I've heard that JW is shopping around for another network. Since most people seem to have only watched it once and was turned off by the Western theme, I don't know what'll happen.
I know that I wasn't thrilled with it at the beginning, but as I forced myself to watch it (hey - it's sci-fi and JW) it really grew on me. I'm sad that it might be over already.

This Friday you can watch the two hour Pilot.
Funny, I thought the pilot was suposed to be the first episode, not the last.
