Dundjinni

Fluid says it's coming out with the mapping program Dundjinni.

They also want $80 for the full version, $40 for the base version. That seems to me to be *way* overpriced, especially considering the e-tools fiasco.

Also, it seems they are using 3.0 monster stats, rather than 3.5.

I like the idea of printing out to 1" scale, though.

Has anyone installed the demo, and do you think it will be worth what they are charging?

I tried it and it looks pretty good for a demo. It sort of reminds me of Dungeon Crafter except that it a little more robust. It can do diagonal lines which is a big step up.

And the learning curve wasn't too steep. It was easier that some of the cad programs out there.

If you use a laptop at the table you can put details on the objects that you put on the map by double clicking them and putting in thier details.

On the down side.

The help file is not included in the demo.

It will more than likely not do overland maps well out of the box.

You need to install Sun Java before using it. (small problem)

The website states that it is useful for creating adventures and maps, but very little is devoted to describing how it is used to create adventures. Are they refering to creating encounters, i.e. monster stats and treasure? Just maps? Professional layout of adventures with flavor text in shaded gray boxes?

I'm rather curious, so maybe I'll just download the demo.

Well, $80 is the same price that they charge for Campaign Cartographer, so maybe they're basing it off of that. I agree, though, that I'm wary after e-tools, though this program does look interesting. I'll have to check out the demo later.

True, but campaign cartographer is quite a powerful program.

Out of curiosity, what were you trying to do that might have required the help file?

Thanks.

Nothing that difficult. I was looking for information on what the buttons were for. Sometimes I just open the help files first to see if there is anything that might spark my creativity first. And ready a help file is good way of letting you know what the program can really do rather than ad hype.

I made a simple map in about 10 min. It looked pretty good. Learning curve is a bit small. I'd recommend they put together a flash demo of a simple map making process get people jumped into it.

Just thought I'd mention that if you want to print maps to a 1" scale, another option is GridSmith. At $40 it is also not cheap, but does make very nice tile maps.

I'm looking forward to trying out the demo for Dundjinni tonight. Certainly looks interesting.

As note, at GenCon SoCal they were giving out heavy-stock rolled maps, poster sized. One was an inn, which flipped over and had a cave network. They looked REALLY sweet, had the 1" grid and everything. I didn't realize it was Fluid until I saw the Dundjinni website linked on yesterday's frontpage.

Ok I admit that initialy it looks nice. But the price is WAY overblown.. sorry thats just how I feel. Perhaps $25 for silver / $35 for gold / $45-$50 for platinum... maybe. Otherwise it looks nice. I wont buy it though for $80 to get top level version. And wont buy a scaled back version at all.

Peace

The $80 version is the $60 version bundled with some art packs, so "Platinum" and "Gold" sound like they're the same thing.

The sample maps look pretty nice, though the "adventure building" feature shown in the screenshots doesn't look all that great. I'll have to try the demo and see what it's like.

One thing that did annoy me was the answer to the last question in their FAQ:

"Because several Fluidites (including Scott Mathews, the President) love D&D and think the community has continually gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to software."

Yeah, we've really been screwed with programs like PCGen, DM's Familiar, TableSmith, RPM, Campaign Suite, DM Genie, CC2, AutoRealm, etc. Or maybe he was just talking about eTools ;)

(Yeah, I know it's just marketting-speak, but still...).
