Dune (D. Lynch) Extended version coming to DVD in May

The Baron rocks in the Lynch version. The heart plugs on all the Harkonnen "commoners" are especially nice looking.

The "extended" version--the one with the 'Alan Smithee' director credit--is really bad. There are *lots* of additions with just narration over a shot of an "artist's conception" of a set. It's certainly nothing worth owning, and nothing David Lynch wants his name on (given the credits).

Really? He was one of the most completely overhauled characters. Gone was the conniving, patient, lucid Baron; in was a raving, screaming, shouting lunatic... Still, I did prefer his death in the Lynch version relative to that in the novel and the miniseries.

I did miss the Baron's plotting and cruelty in the movie, but I think they did him well in the context of the movie itself. I like the thought bubbles myself mainly because Dune works best if every other character is really and truly out of the loop. I think the Sci-Fi miniseries explains too much to its characters.
