The EN World kitten
The July 2006 issue of Dungeon arrived in my mailbox today. Here's the breakdown:
Editorial: Off the Beaten Path, by Erik Mona - Erik recounts some of the great adventures in Dungeon over the last year that were overshadowed by the Age of Worms Adventure Path. He also drops a mention that Robert J. Kuntz's "The Greater Halls," another level of Maure Castle, will appear later this year.
Prison Mail - Letters this month include praise for the non-hack 'n' slash adventure that was "The Prince of Redhand," praise for "And Madness Followed" having Lovecraftian goodness, and complaints about the isometric maps in recent issues.
Tensions Rising, by Ryan Smalley - In this [smallcaps]eberron[/smallcaps] adventure for 4th-level characters, an airship has gone down in the Starpeaks of Aundair, and the PCs are sent to the rescue. The characters have to brave merciless mercenaries and dauntless dolgrims to get to the ship, and then must defend it during the climactic take-off against boarders and suppressive missile fire. A sidebar covers the wheel of wind and water magic item from the Eberron Campaign Setting.
The Coming Storm, by Greg A. Vaughan - In this [smallcaps]Greyhawk[/smallcaps] adventure for 10th-level characters, the raiders from the cursed Temple of Celestial Winds are once again free. Cursed to remain in their temple but for during storms, the raiders were locked away even during storms due to the magic of the Witch-Queen Iggwilv. Now, Iggwilv's magics are gone, and the PCs are all that stand between the cursed raiders and Perrenland. Fans of the Greyhawk setting will enjoy how this issue gives coverage regarding the distant land of Mur (aka the Verdured Heights). An appendix at the end presents several new creatures, including the kamadan, the obah-blessed creature template, the scorned creature template, and the shensahti.
Gates of Oblivion, by Alec Austin - In this adventure for 18th-level characters, the Cult of the Monolith has targetted the PC's world as being the next for consumption. The power of the Colorless, Empty, and Hollow Gates are poised to spread the power of shadow across the world, draining all color and souls as they absorb everything. Only the PCs can stop the city of Lacc from devouring their world, but only if they can destroy the Gates of Oblivion.
Dungeoncraft: Sometimes, It's Just the DM's Fault, by Monte Cook - In this installment, Monte talks about mistakes DMs make, and how to avoid them. A sidebar discusses knowing your own DMing weaknesses.
The Cast: Company of Thieves, by Ashavan Doyon - The Order of the Lavender Rose, a thieves' guild, is described here. Stats are given for the guildmistress, her right hand, and basic members of the guild.
The Dungeon: Magic Mushrooms, by Hal Maclean - Three mushrooms with unusual properties: cutedrop, floatboat, and stealstool, are described here.
Critical Threat: Countess Vita Al-Adora, by Ashavan Doyon - This low-level wizardess long ago went mad wishing she was a vampire. Now, the insane noblewoman's house is the headquarters for the Order of the Lavender Rose, even as the Countess herself waits for the day her vampire beloved returns to her.
Cartoons - The Portent, by Peter Bergting; Mt. Zogon, by Tony Moseley; and Downer, by Kyle Stanley Hunter.
Map of Mystery - The Forsaken Rift.
