Dungeon 172 - Demonomicon of Iggwilv: Codricuhn, the Blood Storm

People tend to forget that Gargantuan is simply a 4x4 square suggestion. I can't remember what page it was on, but I believe the gargantuan entry said 4x4+. Elder Red Dragon or Orcus or whatever 4x4 is ok. But dude with planetoids orbiting him, I'll use 4x4+ thank you very much.

I personally have been pondering how to handle fights on this scale for some time. Still not sure, but those spheres in this article are awesome.

Oh, sure, it isn't an issue of the size category itself. I was more commenting on the basic situation itself, of fighting something so immense, and how to actually portray that in game. Whether the stat block is labeled 'Gargantuan' or not, it could use a small sidebar or similar giving suggestions on how to run such a thing.

I don't think that the spheres of Coagulus orbit Codricuhn in some quasi-gravitational way because he's big, I think they do so solely because he's a demon lord corrupted directly by the Seed of Evil. I love the twist that the demon lord's unwanted realm, a vicious storm and chunks of floating rock, follows him around.

That's the way I understood it. Codricuhn is maybe a few hundred feet high, but he's always at the center of a maelstrom of blood, stone and terror.

I have actually developed a set of quick rules for these in which I introduce 5 new (broad) size categories:

Mega - Castle sized - for Godzilla, Talos
Giga - Mountain sized - for Mokkurkalve, Typhon
Tera - Planet sized - for Atropus, Alklha
Peta - Star sized - for Abraxas, Azathoth
Exa - Solar system sized/nebula sized - for Infinitaurs, Tetragrammaton

The details will be included within my Vampire Bestiary, which will hopefully be out sometime in January.

Excellent to hear that it will be out in January, but I'm surprised your vampire monster book needs rules for solar system sized creatures.

Another cool thing about Coagulus is that its Codricuhn's ironic punishment. The Chained God seduced Codricuhn with promises of dominance and rulership over the mortal realm, but when he was cast down into the Abyss, he gained a terrible realm that he did not want (which was also a mockery of his former primordial self) and subjects that he did not care for and that did not care about him.

Great article, but I too would have liked a description of how big it and the spheres are. Other than that, I loved this article.

From the size and 'might' of the beast, reminds me of the 'primordial' entity that Swamp Thing 'fought' back in the day. The thing that was so massive that it kicked the Specter's ass without bating an eyelash and wound up forcing the Specter into a lesser role for many a year.

The book itself contains monsters from Levels 1-40 (roughly an even spread across all the levels).

There is one Mega-sized monster in the book, one Giga-sized monster and one dragon which has both Mega and Giga-sizes (as well as Large, Huge and Gargantuan versions).

I'm toying with a tera-sized monster, but I may save that for a different book.
