Dungeon of Dread Starter - No roleplay stats

Festivus

First Post
Potential buyers of the starter set might want to think twice before buying it if you are expecting roleplay stat cards (I was). They aren't on the backs of the cards, instead replaced with tips for how to use that figure in DDM combat.

The good: A couple fairly nice double sided maps, a nice quality D&D Minis 2.0 rulebook (I don't play this so I don't care about it). The packaging is totally tamper proof.

The meh: a 20 sider comes with it... I can see where new DDM players would appreciate that. The figures are ok looking, and it's the only place you can get them.

The ugly: no roleplay stats on the cards. The packaging is totally tamperproof, meaning I would have a tough time returning these as I had to mangle the packaging.

So I just bought a few figs with no 4e stats and a repeat of a figure I already had two of (two large green dragons) then you might want to think twice about it. Oh, and these cards aren't online either, for either DDM or D&D.

To me, this is a good thing. Not only for the starter set but especially for the boosters. I want to know that when I buy it no one else has pilfered it or in the case of boosters looked through it and returned it to the store.

The starter set has different packaging. The boosters are still just cardboard that some kid can tease open and slip the minis out of.

The quality of the minis is still very poor, as well. I remain unimpressed by these things. The plastic is soft and weak, and the paint jobs are half-arsed. The green dragon's eyes are unpainted, for example, and the sellsword is just a mass of color slathered on the mini. I've seen other plastic and prepainted minis. These aren't up to basic standards in either category.

This was the first starter set that I've bought. Did other starter sets come with roleplay stats?

Yes, the cards in starter sets were always the same as the cards for DDM, which had RPG stats on the back.

How? I could not get my booster open without mangling the box. The side flaps are glued to the bottom flap and each other, and the top flap is glued to all three, then a slot flap is glued as well. I can't see any way that someone could get a mini out of the box without it being evident the box was tampered with. Badly. I'm just saying.

I picked up the Starter and a booster last weekend for fun, and having played a few times with my fiance, I was pleasantly surprised. It captures a lot of the feel of 4E combat (from what I've experienced) and my fiance actually enjoyed it. She won, so that might have helped. I didn't think the paint jobs were bad--not anything like the stuff the tabletop wargamers do at my local shop (they are insanely good) but they were fine for me. If you really hate the paint job--repaint them.

That was my experience with the boosters also. I have not been able to open one yet, without destroying the box. Granted it could be done cleanly with a knife but that would still be noticeable.

I thought the PC and Yuan-Ti minis from the set were quite well painted for DDMs, honestly. The dragon is decent, but the yellowy belly color and the silly head kinda ruin things otherwise.
