Thats it, they have taken those Dummies Books to far now.

The best way to show new players the game is the D&D basic boxed set. This is just stupid, who the hell needs a "cheat sheet" for a pen & paper game? I hope to the goddess this is a freaking joke, like when target put up marjiuna for sale and forgot to put the writers name with it. If you go look at what the writers have done before they have only done tech books in the past. It seems to be yet another way to scam people out of money on the behalf of walmart.

A couple of comments:

IDG books has "For Dummies" books on everything from Tech to Sex. They have books on Aquariums, Caring for the Elderly, Pets, Managing your Money, Modding your Car, Photography, and as I mentioned before, Sex. D&D for Dummies is NOT out of character for Wiley Publishing / IDG Books.

Second, every little resource can't hurt. The Basic Boxed Set recently released, while good, is also $25.00, and could be seen as somewhat intimidating even for first-timers. The "For Dummies" series carries a reputation nowadays for easy entry for novices, and I think could be worth the time for Bill Slavicsek and Rich Baker to do. Notice that this is under Wiley Publishing's auspices, and not WotC's (though WotC obviously had to give approval I should think). This venture is not paid for by WotC, that I can see.

Believe it or not, I plan on looking at it, and maybe picking it up if it looks like a good teaching tool. Heck, this is something I could loan out to friends if they want to know what D&D is about. I couldn't do that with the Boxed set, because they'd probably look at me like I'm a freak.

But yeah, there seems to be just about too many of them now.
You're not supposed to buy the whole set! The point is that if there are Dummies books about everything, you can buy the one book you need to learn about the one particular thing you need to know right now.

I think that is awesome! Especially if people see it at chain bookstores and buy it for friends or family members even as a joke. If written well, I think it could really help the game.
